Prologue: New Downtown Church - We believe that there is another landscape created when a new building blends into the existing landscape, so we consider it very important to read and understand the context and landscape around the site in the design process. However, Banwol-dong, Hwaseong-si, where the subject site of this project is located, is a neighborhood that is shaping a new downtown through urban development projects. Therefore, there were two main points we focused on in this project. First, "What should the church look like in the new landscape being created, not the existing landscape?" Second, "What should the church look like in the urban landscape?". Although most buildings have a long lifespan, churches, especially, are places that connect religion and people, so they repair old buildings and expand them when space is lacking, always standing in the same place. Since we fully understood this, designing the church, which will stand here for a long time in the future, was a very careful and cautious task. Moreover, since the surrounding landscape was in the transitional phase of being created, we did not know how it would turn out, but we thought it should be made to match the future completed landscape. Fortunately, the site was being developed through an urban development project, and it was clear that the building would be located in an urban landscape in the future. In conclusion, we came up with a simple and calm church that would naturally blend into the urban landscape and match whatever the surrounding landscape would look like.

Closed Site - Apartments, with all their amenities and infrastructure, are the most common and efficient form of living in Korea. For those who choose to live in a detached house instead of an apartment, there must be certain things that make them want such a way of living. Terraces where you can feel nature at any time, large open gardens, and characteristic exteriors with different looks are definitely unique attractions of houses that you can't find in apartments. However, the reality is that densely packed urban planning has resulted in a large number of clustered homes closed on four sides, each with its own privacy, in housing complexes. The same was true for the subject land. As the site was surrounded by other houses on all four sides, the housing condition should be sensitive not only to the privacy of the owner but also to that of neighbors. In the urban context around the site, despite the existence of a large green space nearby, it was impossible to take an unhindered view of the natural landscape due to the houses on the adjacent land. Therefore, we intended to build a house that reflected the client's needs while protecting both their privacy and that of the neighbors and securing the maximum sense of openness in the closed site.

Recently, churches have been performing a role not only as puritanical churches but also as local community facilities. If a church that performs such an intermediate role overwhelms the surroundings with its ornate appearance, it would be absolutely not possible to avoid friction with the surroundings. We thought that urban churches would need to look simple in order to be considerate of neighbors and such formative simplicity in the busy downtown landscape could rather bring stronger symbolism.

For 30 years, commercial buildings in the business area of a housing development district have been recklessly constructed because only their asset and investment values were considered without recognizing the building's relationship with public interest and environments, which has culminated in the Korea's unique program of officetels. Officetels are residential spaces thoroughly alienated from the surrounding urban area as they are located in the commercial area, and just the tool constructed by the endless economic logic without addressing the issue of public spaces, which inevitably causes a number of problems.

A Building Resembling a Mountain - Buildings constructed in a housing development district tend to become functional buildings with a uniform spatial shape due to similar land conditions. This land demanded an active gesture to ensure a view of the mountain in front as well as to protect the family's private life. We thought of a house that could create a quiet and calm atmosphere, and open and close the scenery beyond it. We expected that a fluid courtyard in a house would act sometimes as a yard that united with surrounding nature, and other times as a tranquil yard only for its members. A house resembling a mountain... we hoped that it would be a house that contained a mountain, and intended to show the value of a symbolic volume that embodies surrounding nature, before a functional value, beyond a uniform type of detached house.
