Surrounded by a dense forest in Rio de Janeiro's Atlantic Forest, this summer retreat opens out to the sea of Angra dos Reis and some of its 365 islands in the archipelago, considered one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world. It was in this region that, decades ago, Paulo Jacobsen began working with wooden structures. Initially motivated by the easiness in which this material could be transported through coastal waters, wood is nowadays one of the major design hallmarks of his practice. Therefore, it is amidst this abundant nature that the AEA House lightly touches the ground and incorporates the topography. Respecting the location of a previously existing house, this project sought to use natural elements that could create an architectural space in tune with the surroundings.

Situated in a residential condominium in Guarujá, a city about an hour and a half from São Paulo, this summer retreat takes advantage of the main view to create solutions that prioritize privacy and enjoyment of the living and leisure spaces. This beach house was commissioned by a long-standing client of the office, a couple who spends their vacations on the coast with their family and friends. During our first visit to the site, we understood that we should explore the back of the plot, which offers a view of the sea and where the access to the beach is located. On the other side, the front, accessed through an internal street of the condominium with constant traffic, needed to be more closed-off, while the side facades, in close proximity to neighboring properties, required visual protection. From this analysis, the image of a long, slender volume perpendicular to the access road, supported by slender eaves, emerged on the small plot corresponding to the buildable perimeter. Maintaining the horizontality of the proportion from the exterior and consequently reducing the overall height of the building, we worked with the idea of a half-level. This solution breaks the rigidity of the interior space and allows for different ceiling heights throughout the program.

The façade, a preserved cultural landmark, was the central element from which the entire project took shape. In order to proceed with the renovation of the building, and based on the latest land use and occupation legislation, we proposed erecting a new building while preserving the original façade of the former school.

The MJE Residence is located on a steep slope, dialoguing with the spectacular view of the horizon, lake, and surrounding mountain landscape. Seeking to occupy the land horizontally, we started from the creation of an architecture with only one floor, which subtly interacted with the existing landscape. The integration with the context and the analysis of the topography conditioned the creation of the angled and horizontal two-block structure that constitutes the main volumetry of the residence. Looking for the most favorable solar orientation, the house is composed around two non-orthogonal blocks supported on a large plateau. This positioning seeks to guide the building towards the most favorable points of the landscape, while at the same time providing privacy from the nearest side neighbor.
