Giovanni Batista Piranesi was an Italian printmaker during the 18th century. His interest in the ruins of the Roman Empire led him to create an extensive catalog of reproductions. His fascination with these ruins in many cases led him to invent them, creating an imaginary world of ancient destroyed buildings. His legacy was a contribution to the formation of neoclassicism.

A house that underwent many interventions over time, went from being a house to a rehabilitation center. The new owners bought the place to turn it back into a residence, initially just for the couple. They needed a single-story house with the condition of being able to expand in the future to a second level.

A significant number of sister houses feature our city and other cities and towns in the country. Paired houses, which appear to be the same, but are not. Either to distinguish one from the other, or to meet the needs of different customers, or because they were the same and changed over time.

The house to intervene, the pre-existence built, is a “chorizo” house, one of the most abundant patrimonies in the city of Buenos Aires. In this house, as usually happens in “chorizo” houses, a sequence of rooms are aligned and ventilated along a side patio.

We find that the existing house to intervene was resolved on a single floor, detached from the perimeter walls, except in the garage sector, discovering a continuous courtyard that takes on different dimensions from the entrance of the house to the back of it. This condition was interesting for us to think of a project for a new house in constant contact with the outside, taking advantage of the continuity of this courtyard.

We adopt the courtyard on the ground floor as the center on which to articulate the different rooms. The small dimensions of it made it necessary to open their views as much as possible. For this, pivoting systems were used to solve the opening of the courtyard doors and the terrace, in order to generate greater interior-exterior integration.
