An envelope embracing the city and a family – This residence explores the theme of reconciling family time with architectural time. Situated in a residential neighborhood near Maebashi Station, it envelops the life of a family of seven—a couple and their five children. Featuring curved exterior walls that encircle a central courtyard to shield against the dry winds characteristic of northern Kanto, the design places an ample, gymnasium-like space called the "Arena" within this enclosure. This configuration generously accommodates the family's changing needs while embracing the light and breezes of each season. The house is conceived not merely as a "machine for living," but as an envelope that softly cradles the time spent by the family and the community. (Mitsuyoshi Miyazaki / HAGISO)

This is the third location of the coffee brand BERTH COFFEE, planned and operated by Backpackers' Japan, known for establishments like Nui and CITAN. The new café is located in Yokohama's Minatomirai area, just a three-minute walk from Minatomirai Station, occupying approximately 75 square meters within a high-rise complex. Adjacent to it is a shared terrace within the building. We were fortunate to have the opportunity to design both the café and the shared terrace as a unified space.

This area, designated as a quasi-fire prevention district, preserves numerous shrines and temples that survived wartime destruction. In response to its conventional residential surroundings, the design introduces a subtle yet distinctive element of 10° rotation.

Renewal of the employee dining hall at Lumine Kitasenju, a shopping center in Tokyo. The dining hall has been used as a meal and rest area for store staff working for Lumine, facility management and sales staff, and cleaning staff. For a long time, the dining hall was popular for its panoramic view of the Arakawa River and its reasonably priced, nutritionally balanced meals, but the interior lacked a sense of unity due to aging and ad hoc renovations, making it an undesirable environment. The client also aimed to increase the motivation of the workers and create opportunities for collaboration among the restaurants.

This is a renovation of a small wine bar in Tokyo. We placed the kitchen counter in the center of the space, planned an aisle around it, and created a lounge space in the back. To maximize the width of the aisle, we cut all furniture corners at an angle, resulting in uniquely shaped furniture.

Completed in 1964, the year of the Tokyo Olympics, this building was built as the headquarters of the Maebashi Shinkin Bank, which was the predecessor of the present Shinonome Shinkin Bank after its merger. The company put much effort into building the state-of-the-art steel-reinforced concrete structure at the time. However, an earthquake resistance assessment conducted in 2015 revealed some problems with the structure. When we joined the project, the policy was to rebuild the building. However, the structural engineer's inspection revealed that there were no fatal defects in the existing structure and that the building could meet the earthquake resistance standards by restoring the balance, making renovation a feasible option for the project. In addition, the project involved a plan to relocate the nearby FM Gunma building to the site from the beginning. The unprecedented co-location of the regional media and the regional financial institution would hopefully create greater synergy between the two companies sharing the same area.
