Between 2019 and 2025, a design team comprising gmp · Architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners and bbp: architekten developed the project as a conceptual continuation of the existing building.
The Hyparschale in Magdeburg, built in 1969 to a design by Ulrich Müther, was ceremonially reopened on June 20, 2024. After standing vacant for over twenty years, and following the commission by the authorities of the state capital of Magdeburg, the badly dilapidated concrete shell structure was comprehensively restored and converted from 2019 to 2024 to plans by gmp · von Gerkan, Marg and Partners Architects. The focus of gmp’s design has been on retaining the spatial effect of the shell roof and on reviving the building, which was listed as a historic monument in 1998, as a multifunctional venue for events and exhibitions. As a result of the new functional concept combined with conservation requirements the “new” Hyparschale is a guiding example of the preservation and modernization of additional works by Müther as well as other buildings from the post-war era.

In the southern Chinese mega-city of Guangzhou, a new city component has been created by completing a new mall - in the scale of the old city center - that is open towards the city. With its spatial arrangement consisting of six volumes and featuring a translucent, terracotta facade with an LED backlighting scheme, the design by the architects von Gerkan, Marg, and Partners (gmp) creates a relationship with the historic neighborhood.

With the new Fengtai Station in Beijing, the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) have completed a complex transport building: in terms of square area, it is Asia’s largest railway station and the first railway station in China, which the tracks for high-speed trains are located above those for normal trains, which significantly reduces the footprint area of the station. Under its seemingly floating roof the new station – with two levels above ground and a floor area of almost 400,000 square meters – combines a system of different transport lines. Twelve tracks for the high-speed trains going north/south from Beijing to Hong Kong and from Zhangjiakou to Shanghai are located as terminus stations at the top level. The conventional railway lines with 20 tracks are at level 0, and two underground lines are at the level below. With these services, Fengtai Station will be an important new transport intersection and the largest of Beijing’s three intercity railway stations. At peak times it is expected that up to 20,000 passengers will use the station to arrive, depart or change trains.

With the completion of the new headquarters of SachsenEnergie AG, an important element of Dresden’s skyline has been created. The architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) have designed a building complex with one thirteen-story and one eight-story tower, with a height of 51 and 32 meters respectively, which is in keeping with the urban context around the main railway station. Located to the south of the inner city, the new development is a visible landmark that fits in with the city of Dresden’s new town planning guide for high-rise buildings. The project, under the general planning of gmp, was planned, using the Building Information Modeling (BIM) method in all trades.
