Sculpted by the ornamental qualities of its site and locale, Tiara House is a spirited addition to a late 1800s Victorian terrace in Melbourne’s inner north. The double-storey, north-facing dwelling, which overlooks the historic parklands of Edinburgh Gardens, inspired FMD Architects to embrace a sentimental and sustainable approach in the new addition, offering a poetic response to a place grounded by amenity and liveability. The home’s ornamental frontage is contemporized with a neutral palette, enhancing its original iron lacework, corbels, and decorative plasterwork. Upon entry, a wide arched hallway, formal front room, and original timber stairs are sensitively preserved and saturated in shades of blue, creating a renewed sense of mood and occasion. A second bedroom is converted to a shared bathroom, awash with curved forms, inky blue tiling, speckled terrazzo, luminous granite, and reeded glass.

Pitch House extends itself as a series of defined spaces that unfurl to form a generous interior, filled with light from a high-level window above. Partitioned by its neighboring twin, Pitch House reinvigorates what was previously a discontinuous plan, granting the space a new relationship with light, its side courtyard, and backyard. The architecture develops a narrative around the ‘pitch’, a form that extends to its highest point, the humble glow framing the open interior, whilst reflecting the continuous slope of the existing roof.

Discreetly positioned behind a single-fronted Victorian façade, the addition reinvents the previously disconnected floorplan, creating a highly adaptable family home connected to its garden. The architecture develops a narrative around reverberation and progression, drawing on the ‘ripple’ notion to explore deft forms that mediate the descent of the site’s gentle fall and associated impact on the interior.

CLT House is a bridge between architectural thinking and sustainable construction methods. It is a poetic and pragmatic balance between architect and builder, whose relationship developed from the concept design to ensure a highly considered outcome. The project encompasses a reconfiguration of the existing building as the base with a new upper floor addition which spans the established gardens on the site and replans the home with a new central core for this multigenerational family home. The rhythmic quality of the sawtooth roof to the new bridge structure is both lyrical and rational. The pitched roofs to the north integrate an extensive solar array with high level windows at its peak to capture the changing light throughout the day. The large 10m clear span walls are punctuated with long slot windows for cross ventilation. The roof peaks also have integrated motorised ventilation slots to release excess heat in summer which work in conjunction with industrial ceiling fans.

Our response was inspired and directed by the client’s determined assertion that she was merely the current caretaker of this ‘old lady’; of this building that had preceded and would surely succeed her into the future. Beauty, aging, utility, and continuity were explored through the analogy of the existing house as an ‘old lady’ with a bustle dress.

Underpinning our design notions and considerations for this home were two instinctual ideas: that of our client’s fondness for ‘Old Be-al’ and associated desire for an enhanced connection between the house and the old-growth eucalypt landscape; and our own determined appreciation for the house’s original brickwork, something we hoped to celebrate and re-cast within the existing dwelling.
