Conceived as a tower crafted from a pair of tall, slender forms, 88 Walker contrasts with the wider proportions of its neighbors, acting as a focal point on the skyline. The development lies at the heart of the North Sydney CBD and is integrated with the heritage Firehouse hotel. Together, the 2-story former fire station, now a heritage pub, and 50-story mixed-use tower narrate the changing story of North Sydney’s growth from an early colonial suburb on the opposite shore from the town of Sydney to a major commercial component of the global city Sydney has become, housing some of the world’s largest corporate tenants in an evolving and vibrant CBD.

The Bond Commercial Building / fitzpatrick+partners

The Bond is an innovative six-story engineered timber office building located in a suburban business park approximately 30km from Sydney. The building integrates 10,500m² of commercial office space, health consultation, and treatment rooms, a childcare facility, and a ground floor supporting retail uses. It is the first of 3 buildings to edge a new food and beverage plaza precinct. The site is part of the Cumberland Plain, lands of the Dhargug Nation, being the inland Aboriginal peoples of the Sydney hinterland. The original grasslands were rich in animals and plants and sustained these peoples for Millennia. The area was developed in the late 1700s as one of Australia’s first farms, with the actual building site being an early brickworks, creating the bricks for the expansion of the suburbs north of Sydney harbor in the 1950s. It has subsequently been redeveloped as a new residential and working park.

The Seed House is positioned on a typical Castlecrag steep bushland block overlooking Middle Harbour. Surrounded by rocky outcrops and angophora trees, the home grows out of its natural surroundings which informed its choices of materials - stone, timber, steel, and concrete. Utilizing the latest technologies in engineered timber construction, this healthy home imbues a sense of warmth and comfort. Every bracket and screw is used to inform the overall aesthetic of the home, with materials selected so as to develop a patina of use and character with time. The normal is sculptured to become beautiful. Its experimentation in construction and engineering has supported the architectural vision. It is a forever home, yet it is home to a young family. It will adapt and change as they do, forever. The Seed House is an adaptable and healthy forever home.
