The school building of SO Lux on the Stauntonstraat in the Utrecht district of Zuilen was realized in 1973 and no longer meets the current wishes for special education in terms of spatial and functional aspects. In addition, the building is very outdated. It has been decided to renovate the building. The current school is characterized as a single-storey building that extends over the entire location in two wings. Due to these low buildings, the function of the building is difficult to read, and there is no clear recognition of an entrance. In the school, the group rooms are adjacent to long corridors without a 'heart' or meeting space. The design was developed from the existing cross-section. The corridor zones on Stauntonstraat are lower than the adjacent group rooms. By organizing all the new installations here, we can reach both the corridor zones and the group rooms and the insulated shielding of these creates a new façade that we use for the architecture.

History. In the 1970s, the Koninklijke Coöperatieve Cosun U.A. (Suikerunie / the Dutch Sugar Union) is looking for a new head office in Breda. The location they eventually acquired is on the western edge of Breda. The residential areas in the immediate surroundings were not there yet. De Suikerunie commissioned Wim Quist to design a suitable head office, which was completed around 1975. In the original design, the Suikerunie site was made accessible on the west side. The location, which had a green, park-like layout, was entered via an entrance gate with a garage and gatehouse on either side. The employees and visitors were escorted to the entrance located in the cutout on the southwest side of the building. The diagonal positioning of the building in relation to the plot is a result of this route. The grounds, visual arts, and buildings formed a carefully designed ensemble.

Located in the Merwedekanaal in the neighborhood Rivierenwijk in Utrecht, we designed a contemporary-looking houseboat. The houseboat opens maximally to the water and has a more intimate relationship with the green front yard on the shore. The contemporary appearance is provided by a composition of large openings. The houseboat's robust character comes from the dark aluminum plinth with the construction of vertical wooden slats and black window frames. Inside, the houseboat has a clean but warm atmosphere due to the openwork wooden ceiling combined with walls and floors in light shades.

For SPO Utrecht, we have designed an energy-neutral primary school for special education at the Winklerlaan in Utrecht. In the green space in which the school located, we have placed two volumes, robust in materialization, soft in shape, and light in color. The two programmatic volumes (education and gym) can be distinguished by their materialisation but are linked by the entrance and the playroom. The masonry of the façade is divided into rims, the middle of which works at the entrance as a canopy and thus forms the connection between the two volumes. The rounded corners soften the building and connect the various outdoor spaces in a smooth manner.

The riverside has been kept transparent to maximise the view, the dyke side has a more modest, closed character to guarantee privacy. The house refers to the neighbouring houses in the original ribbon development in terms of form but has a contemporary character with minimal details and rich colours. The copper roof and bricks have been chosen in the same shade of redbrown colour to make the whole appear as one volume.

As the population was decreasing the building became too big and a replacement was looked for. At a distance of 700 metres, in Brakkenstein park, a new residence is erected. In the same park there is a printing works from the 1930’s, its characteristic industrial identity well intact. It was purchased and designated to house all functions that should support the residence: refectory (restaurant), offices, archives and library. Besides, a restaurant for non-residents is realised. The total plan is designed in a design team, in which Diederendirrix is responsible for the residence, Kees Tolk for the garden design and we for the printing works and enlargement. The corridor connecting the buildings and the garden is designed in consultation.

In the heart of 's-Hertogenbosch a former office and workshop was completely renovated and converted into a loft. Because the building is 20 meters deep and really only has light at the front and rear, access of daylight has been an important theme. The explicit wish of the client was to be able to enjoy the property as one large space. Various voids/vides were introduced that allow daylight to penetrate deep into the home.
