Near Aroeira, where the Atlantic breeze tempers the pine forest and low density preserves quietness, this dwelling arises from the clients’ desire for a private, simple, and refined atmosphere — a discreet house that does not impose itself on the act of inhabiting, but instead nurtures it. A retreat from the bustle of city life they once knew, capable of embracing a calmer, slower rhythm. Rooted in an idea shared by the couple, the project takes form as a contemporary reinterpretation of the Mediterranean and Islamic courtyard house: an introverted ensemble of spaces that open inward, articulated through patios that regulate light, air, and temperature, weaving an intrinsic dialogue between interior and exterior — not through rigid boundaries, but through subtle thresholds.

A ribbon of shadow and light: a continuous gesture that draws a house and unites its volumes. Set within a plot of limited dimensions, governed by a subdivision regulation largely indifferent to formal or spatial diversity, this house emerges from a desire to transcend the constraints imposed upon it. In a context often marked by the repetition of hermetic volumes and the absence of meaningful dialogue with the exterior, the guiding concept of this project seeks precisely to counter that tendency: it explores the continuity between interior and exterior, between solid and void, between the rigidity of the plot and its legal boundaries and the fluidity of domestic life.

Developing a project for a house uniquely for vacations has challenged us to create a spatial and programmatic concept that reflects this specificity. We sought to understand the qualities of a vacation home and we focused on some characteristics that seemed essential to us. An inner spatial organization that allowed a strong coexistence among its users, a very close relation between the social area and its exterior, and an atmosphere that revived the morphology of traditional Portuguese houses in the countryside. Our proposal has resulted in an unusual dialogue between modern and traditional.

There are territories, buildings, spaces that represent more than just their physical and material dimension. They have the ability to create sensations and appeal to our spirit and our imagination, in a constant dialogue between the sacred and the profane. Our intention for this Islamic Cultural Centre - located in Colinas do Cruzeiro, Odivelas - was to provide the space with spatial and symbolic qualities that potentially could create in the visitor an awareness of the mystic and the sacred. Being a space dedicated to spread the Islamic identity, it is also a space for the whole community, a space for dialogue and sharing of culture and knowledge. Therefore, the program for this Centre had to contemplated an exhibition space, a space for dissemination of literature, a meeting/studding room, and a male and female prayer space.

What is it to be MAIS (plus) FITNESS? Understanding the charisma behind one existing brand is to comprehend that what defines it is the people. It is the will to belong to this “tribe” that makes the people to join and want to belong to this fitness community. From this concept comes the motto for this new gym in Torres Vedras, a middle size city in the West region of Portugal. Our main challenge was the creation of a spatial image identity for this and future MAIS FITNESS gyms.
