Located in the small settlement of Bowentown, on the Bay of Plenty in New Zealand’s North Island and placed within a rugged coastal landscape, the Bowentown Bach utilizes its surroundings to create a space of refuge that looks out onto the vast foredunes and ocean ahead. This eroded singular form sits on the threshold of a seaside subdivision and coastal wilderness. The unique concept for this dwelling takes inspiration from a piece of driftwood. Washed up, weathered, and charred from an unsuccessful beach fire, gradually receding into the dunes. Incisions reveal golden hues of protected, untouched inner wood. The Bowentown Bach is designed to resemble this, creating a warm and inviting living space.

Not only is this project a success in terms of connecting our cityscape back to the River, it represents a fresh way of thinking about Urban Design in Hamilton City. Edwards White Architects was engaged by Hamilton City Council and presented with a fresh opportunity to create a meaningful visual and physical connection with one of our city’s best natural assets. At a macro level the design seeks to establish a park that serves two functions. Firstly, as a destination where people can pause, interact and enjoy river views. Secondly as a device that links the disparate levels of the lower river path, upper promenade and main street.

Responding to a narrow site this small retreat has been orientated to capture the best of the sun and views towards the Waikato River and Hakarimata ranges beyond. The simple skewed form of the house has an appropriate scale and presence within the wider landscape.
