The plane-like building volume can be interpreted as a solitary gesture. The orthogonal form of the plane plays off of the typologies present in the surrounding urban fabric, which is characterized by manufacturing plants. The diagonal relationships resulting from this strategy create the basis for the structure of the exterior spaces.

The site of the Escherpark building, a clearly defined block just outside of Zurich’s city center, is located in the immediate vicinity of numerous cultural institutions and spacious parks. With several schools and recreational areas within walking distance and a physical relationship to the nearby lake, the opportunely situated area is ideal for a residential development. The Escherpark project new construction reacts to the local, semi-urban struc- ture of irregularly scaled, detached buildings and develops an ensemble of eleven buildings out of four unique volume types.

The site will be divided up in a linear arrangement parallel to the main access road leading to Industriestrasse. The principle of coexistence will be established in the process in order to achieve maximum benefit while keeping expenditure to a minimum: roads and entrances will be positioned parallel to existing roads in order to make everywhere as easily accessible as possible: while deliveries will be made via a direct access from the road, the entrance for customers and employees will be located at the front. As a result, the facility itself – which can be doubled for the purpose of creating an expansion scenario – will be subdivided into the following programmatic strips:

The park-like site is dominated by a bulky, authoritative old school building from the early twentieth century that has had many extensions added. The most recent extension concentrates on a precisely set single building, which enhances the different areas of the park, without affecting its space continuum. The new building is four floors in height and provides, at an appropriate distance, a new, confident opponent towards the 19th Century main building.

The 50% steepness of the site and the existing precious panorama has generated a wide range of terrace variations in the neighborhood. To be outside means to deal with the presence of all the terrace holders. The client’s need of extraordinary privacy was enhanced by the position of volumes, generating a micro context, quasi their own neighborhood.

The School Centre is part of the extension of the school campus Lättenwiese, which was built in the 70ties. The extension foresees two buildings added on the edges of the campus connecting the old town of Opfikon with the emerging area Zurich North, and thus creating a new urban orientation of the school campus. The low, wide volume of the School Centre refers to the scale of the old town.
