Nestled on the three-sided lakefront central island of Beijing's Chaoyang Park, the 2008 Olympic-era outdoor Shell Theatre has completed its renewal by DUTS design. Aligned with the Liangma River cultural waterfront masterplan, the project adopts a low-intervention "10% interface renewal" strategy, eschewing full demolition to redefine the symbiosis between performance venue, public park and waterfront landscape.

Foreword: "No. 78 Bancang Street" in Nanjing. After nearly 40 years of rapid development, Chinese cities have reached the critical point of large-scale spatial growth is unsustainable and land development space is severely limited. Both the government and enterprises are actively exploring an innovative way of urban development and construction, thinking about how to transform the existing land’s function and rebuild that structure through renewal and regeneration, so as to integrate with urban innovation and a new economy. In July 2019, the Zijin Campus of Nanjing Normal University, with a long history and a simple style ended its mission as a university campus. The campus covers a total area of 110,000 square meters, and the “above-ground” building area is 80,000 square meters. It leaves many campus memories for its past students and the cultural link between this university and the city.

Project Background. With the introduction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area policy, the city of Foshan has begun to attract public attention. In the 2020 selection of new Tier 1 cities, Foshan is among the new Tier 1 cities for the first time. Foshan’s profound Lingnan culture has also attracted more and more attention and has become a new regional urban cultural center. Recently, DUTS Design completed the renovation of a century-old Lingnan house located in Lingnan Tiandi, Foshan together with Chinese kids fashion brand balabala. It has been transformed into a brand new space named PARK by balabala, a park experience space that has no boundaries with nature, creating a composite space integrating clothing, parent-child leisure, culture, and fashion lifestyle, bringing people a brand-new upgraded immersive experience. The century-old Lingnan building was “rebirthed” with new vitality from the unbounded natural landscape and the fusion of new business forms.

It covers an area of 52,300 square meters and has a ground floor area of 15,000 square meters and a total building height of 46 meters. In the architectural design, simple geometric sphere with unique recognition is adopted, together with the classic proportion of patterns and texture. However, it is undoubtedly necessary to enlarge such a refined and figurative shape into a public building of 90 meters in diameter and 46 meters in height, which has brought huge challenges to the designer. How to reflect the pattern texture and form proportion but also to avoid concretization is the first biggest challenge faced by the designer.
