At the 2025 Shanghai Urban Space Art Season, a dynamic "Green Sun" rises on the riverside of Fuxing Island Ship Berth Park—an installation we named "Sun Machine". Shanghai Shipyard Riverside Park was formerly the site of the Zhonghua Shipbuilding Factory. While Shanghai changes with each passing day, this place has remained largely unchanged. As a result, the factory buildings, huge tower cranes and tracks together create a strong industrial atmosphere in this area. The clamor of shipbuilding in days gone by still seems to echo, with machines clanging and clattering ceaselessly. This time, we have transported the playground equipment from the street parks of our childhood memories into such a setting. Incorporating the imagery of ceaselessly running machinery and the radiant sun as natural symbols, this installation employs concave metal discs and semicircular orange-red lamps to convey an intuitively perceptible resonance.

The project is situated in Xueshan Village, Changping District, Beijing, at the junction between urban and rural areas. It only takes about 30 minutes to drive to the city's Second Ring Road from here. This location is considered conveniently accessible in Beijing, a megacity. The homeowner is a fellow alumni of mine. His building plot in the suburban area of Beijing had been left unused for many years. In 2022, he conceived the idea of utilizing it, though the specific manner of how to do so remained uncertain. I remember during our first discussion, he mentioned three possibilities: (1) using it as a second residence for himself, with the possibility of his parents occasionally staying there; (2) converting it into his company's office space after three years; or (3) renting it out if no concrete plans were finalized. Therefore, our design process began by systematically analyzing the corresponding relationships between these three different functional requirements and the spatial layout.

In early 2023, LUXELAKES planned to launch a new project in Wuhan. Having collaborated on multiple previous projects—such as Dotsss Children's Museum, Edenland Architectural, and CPI Planning in Chengdu, as well as The CAPE Commercial District and Qilou Historic Street Planning in Hainan—we were already familiar with each other and worked together seamlessly. As a result, we collaborated again to design a restaurant within a children's playground. During the preliminary planning phase, the restaurant was named "The Brave Cabin," as it was surrounded by challenging recreational climbing equipment. We hoped the building would inspire children's courage to overcome difficulties. With an indoor area of less than 200 square meters, the building has a relatively small footprint. Our goal was to create ample semi-outdoor spaces where visitors could relax in the shade. Additionally, thanks to its prominent location at the island's gateway, the building is visible from a distance to arriving visitors.

A thousand years ago, the renowned Northern Song literary giant Su Shi was banished to Huizhou and might have paced back and forth along this very river, drawing on the Lingnan landscape and customs to pen his "Sixteen Joys of Life in Huizhou." A millennium has passed, and people today have drawn inspiration from Su Shi's "Sixteen Joys of Life in Huizhou" to build sixteen pavilions along the circuit road between Nankun Mountain and Luofu Mountain. These pavilions form a collection entitled the "Nankunshan-Luofushan Rim Pioneer Zone Architectural Art Project". Our project "Floral Wander Loop", is one of these pavilions—the Tiegang River Pavilion.

The village of Maying, located in the Yanqing District of Beijing, derives its name from Maying Castle. Maying Castle was constructed during the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty. It has a rectangular shape and is characterized by city walls made of rammed earth. Historically, it served as a significant military fortress and post station. Nowadays, the artificial features of the castle have been erased by time and lost their original form, making it difficult to recognize the original square shape. The rammed earth walls have weathered to become part of the natural environment, coexisting with the willow forest that has been growing on the site for more than seventy years. The village is full of old corn that is being dried, and the ambiance of a typical northern Chinese village envelops the senses. Farther northwest of the village is the Yeyahu National Wetland Park, which is open as far as the eye can see, as there are no more buildings to block the view.

Stillness and Motion. Through the perpetual interaction between glaciers and seawater, the glacial ice, which boasts an average age exceeding 5,000 years, will ultimately drift toward the ocean and transform into icebergs that undergo continuous displacement by the flux of ocean currents. In our opinion, the fascination of icebergs lies not only in the thousands of years of unchanging ice, and the unpredictable location due to drifting. It also stems from the mysterious seven-eighths concealed beneath the sea's surface, as the writer Ernest Hemingway mentioned.

On the way to the project site, there is an abundance of lush green trees that decorate the surroundings. As we traversed the Guanting Reservoir wetland, we first saw the distant Xiaohaituo Mountain in the Olympic Park of Yanqing District, Beijing. After a few turns, our gaze fixed upon two rows of small houses situated in the northeast corner of Qianheilongmiao Village after the fruit orchard. The terrain of the courtyard gradually rises from south to north. Adjacent to the east wall of the courtyard is a natural wood growing on a slope, appearing as if it has been expressly prepared for recounting a story of escape from the doldrums of adulthood and urban life.

Time passing, life changing, more and more possibilities coming up, all these have directly and drastically left marks on Beijing Hutong, which seems to be history, but for me, it’s more like future. From June 1st 2019, number 36 Guozijian Street, a small Hutong house will be put into use after more than two years of design and construction. There will be a small exhibition about our design practice. Actually it’s more of a review of our past, and we hope we can find something fun out of it, like finding new knowledge in an old book.

Over these years, I always go camping with family or friends to deep mountains and forests, to desert or snow land. Those were where we enjoy the broad starlit sky together and keep far away from crowded city life. In the city, people race against precious time, yet time flies so slowly by spending in vain here. We were not swayed by considerations of gain and loss, which help us learn more in the process of wasting time.
