Reconstruction of Urban Memory on the Public Shoreline of the Grand Canal. Background. In May 2022, the renovation and upgrading plan for the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal (Wuxi section) was completed, proposing a design strategy of gradual implementation of "renovation, revegetation, connection, revitalization, and empowerment". In 2023, Liangxi District of Wuxi City launched the construction of the waterfront space in the Beitang Street section. The entire project is about 3.6 kilometers long. The starting point is at Jieguan Pavilion Alley on Beitang Street, and the end point is the planned and under-construction Beijian Park. It is a waterfront green corridor connecting Beijian Park and the park belt along the ancient city moat.

As one of the "high-quality expansion" schools in Shanghai, JSES is located in the New City with the fastest population growth. Derived from the spirit of "experimentation", it can be regarded as a "Cross-border School". For the city, the campus crosses the urban road boundary; for the project, the full-stage participation of the school principal crosses the boundary of education and design; for the space, the professional boundaries of architecture, interior and landscape are crossed and integrated.

The 12th Cotton Mill in the southern section of Yangpu Riverfront is the first plot to be developed in the 5.5km shoreline, which completed its transformation from industrial to commercial use 20 years ago. Unfortunately, the earlier development strategy did not preserve any historical relics，leaving a wasteland. In the context of the connection of the Huangpu River waterfront public space, the design team focused on addressing the dual challenges updating the flood control system and the echoing historical memory.

A large number of factories related to textiles and manufacturing have brought a long-term prosperity which has continued to promote the growth of industry-related population.
