A Design Rooted in Experience – Blending Digital and Physical Spaces - In a world where online shopping dominates, physical spaces must go beyond simple transactions and create immersive experiences. Aimer Suzhou headquarters embraces this shift, offering an environment that fosters deep brand interaction and connects with people on a human level. "In designing Aimer Suzhou headquarters, we sought to create a building that reflects both the brand's identity and the evolving nature of commercial spaces. Flowing forms, layered transparency, and multifunctional spaces turn architecture into an extension of the brand itself," says Binke Lenhardt, co-founder of Crossboundaries.

Relax & Decelerate - With global warming, conflicts, the energy crisis, and past pandemic travel restrictions, it's understandable that the urgency for a self-sufficient, mobile refuge has surged worldwide. Crossboundaries redesigned a fully solar-powered motorboat with high-end tiny-home characteristics functioning as a slow-motion traveling nest. The exterior’s resemblance to a bus on the water sparked the interest of the new owner, and with enough space to invite family and friends for a getaway, she named this personal retreat “Fàng Sōng 放松”, which translates from Chinese into “Relax” and relates to her previous home in Beijing.

Background. By the end of 2020, the two most significant typologies for everyday use as a society were abruptly shaken by COVID-19. The home as a place of life and the office as a place of work were under reconsideration. Most worldwide surveys indicate that more than 65% of people expect to work in a hybrid scenario after the pandemic. Which kind of synergies can be discovered in a new ecology between environmental, social, and cultural dimensions? The answer should be a living environment that actively transforms the office’s modes.

Contextual consistency - on a Macro, Meso, Micro Level. The architects started with reviewing the overall urban context of the project (macro). Then, continued by gradually zooming in on the local circumstances of the site, examining the surrounding educational, commercial, and residential facilities in relation to potential accesses and connections in between the river and the bay area (meso). Finally, on the given design site, they also reassessed the existing building of the Metro terminal including its parking(micro). The first challenge is the 1,2 km long stretched building complex. With an overall height of about 15 m, a width of 70 m at the widest, and 50 m at the narrowest point, the original complex completely cut off nearby neighborhoods from accessing the bay, neither adding any aesthetic value nor serving a specific functional purpose.

"It takes a village to raise a child!" – An African proverb that underpins the value of a community being engaged in a child’s upbringing. The diversity of people and places that create it, offering them experiences to grow in safe and healthy environments. However, today in China’s rural areas, more and more children are in the primary care of their grandparents or live in boarding schools. This mass shift in social structure has dissolved some the natural connection between children and their families and communities.

Modern China is a place of continuously shifting socioeconomics. By 2020, more than 60% of the population will reside in urban areas – a dramatic increase from the 26% of 1990. This massive urbanization and densification puts tremendous pressure on both cities and citizens to adapt quickly. Soon the majority of people in China will live in mid- or high-rise residential towers, whose standardized layouts will become increasingly unaccommodating for the new nuclear family unit, digital nomad, or co-living / co-working community.
