Oculus House is a residence in Queenstown, New Zealand that balances calm and inward-focused living with expansive alpine views. Centered around its namesake, an oculus courtyard, the home responds directly to its elevated site, framing key vistas towards the mountains, while accommodating both everyday living and the needs of visiting family and guests.

It was on a Japanese ski trip that the owners of this Wanaka house came to appreciate the efficiency of small spaces. Staying in a compact two-bedroom vacation home in the mountains, they saw that a small, carefully designed house could be comfortable and pleasant to live in. Based in Singapore, the family of five took annual trips to Wanaka, usually staying with extended family in an existing four bedroom house on this lakeside site. The idea for Sugi House was conceived to allow for a degree of separation on their trips.

Located amongst vineyards in the foothills of the Dunstan Mountains in Central Otago, New Zealand, the client was seeking to create a permanent home that capitalized on the impressive view’s westwards. They were looking for a design that could bring all day sunlight into the living spaces, with a clean and uncluttered feel, that captured the huge surrounding panorama. This brief for a minimal form was distilled down to a floor plane and a roof plane, with fully glazed walls between. The idea was to create an open pavilion that appeared to almost float over the rocky site, allowing occupants to look up and down the valley in its entirety.

With a bold mask to the suburban street, this house leaves all the pleasure for the people who reside within its walls. Located on an elevated site in a relatively new subdivision overlooking Lake Wanaka, the house is a place to privately and comfortably indulge in the extensive mountain and lake views the alpine town is known for. Designed by Barry Condon of Condon Scott Architects, Ruby Ridge House is situated on a challenging, wedge-shaped site that borders two suburban streets. With a simple, mono-pitched roof and curve-edged, cedar-clad walls, the dynamic design directs the observer’s view towards the alpine panorama ahead, allowing the homeowners to enjoy their space without the sense of being overlooked. “The Ruby Ridge site is bordered by suburban streets on two sides so we wanted create a design that would make the occupants of the house feel secure and not overlooked from the street,” says Barry.
