Sited next to a band of cottonwoods and aspens occupying the former riverbed of the Snake River, Black Fox Ranch consists of a couple’s primary residence and a barn with stables. The design and planning draw from the site’s history as a working cattle ranch, with 100-year-old irrigation ditches, remnants of a 19th-century trapper’s cabin, corrals, and game trails (seasonally frequented by 400+ head of elk) that crisscross the 35-acre ranch.

A series of undulating tectonic structures set against an aspen grove near Wilson, Wyoming, this mountain home serves as a creative retreat for a California-based couple. The 35-acre property is set at the base of the Tetons and encompasses several ecosystems, with old-growth forests merging into stands of young pine and aspen trees before transitioning into rolling meadows. The homeowners, authors who also own and manage an independent record label out of Mill Valley, California, were looking for a nature-oriented outpost in Wyoming in which to pursue their writing practice.

Evolving as deliberately as the forest surrounding it, the Paintbrush Residence stands as a testament to the longevity of the thoughtful design. Situated in a dappled Aspen grove outside Jackson, Wyoming, the treehouse-like project reorients the occupant to their place in nature, bringing them into a closer, more intimate cohabitation. Under CLB’s care, the home has been carefully crafted and recrafted over the past two decades in a series of graceful iterations which support the site’s shifting inhabitants.

The first, PARKing Day, transforms parking spaces around town into temporary public art interventions. The capacities of a parking space determined the dimensions for the Get Out/Get In structure. The second event, GLOW Nights, is a month-long must-see exhibit produced by Jackson Hole Public Art. This Teton Village event features original art installations which use colorful light as a medium to celebrate the unique phenomena found in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Artists draw inspiration from the megafauna, calderas, hot springs, and dramatic vistas that inspire.

A spectacular site, artistic freedom, and clients with a vision came together to create the perfect opportunity for CLB to design a modern art piece on the banks of the Snake River. The 20-acre property brought its challenges. An Army Corps of Engineers-built berm created a visual barrier to the water, and a healthy cottonwood grove, though offering the ultimate in privacy, screened the views to the Tetons. The architects’ solution was to build platforms on site to study the river, the seasons, and the views, then elevate the home five feet above ground level to lift the main living area above the riverine meadow.

The history and splendor of Wyoming’s natural environment factor heavily into the design of Lefty Ranch. Nestled perfectly between the Snake River and valley proper — with panoramic views of the Tetons to the west and north and Gros Ventre mountains to the east — Lefty Ranch speaks directly to the pond it borders, as well as the big timber and historic corrals that dot its 35 acres. A dramatic approach teases views of the home through a sea of trees before carrying visitors over a bridge and onto the property. While most ponds in Teton County require a 50-foot buffer between home and water, this man-made body of water has the freedom to forego that restriction.
