In a corner of Changning District, Shanghai, several old roads encircle the former residence of Li Hongzhang's mother, where the surge of urbanization collides with the suburban texture of the former concessions from the first half of the 20th century. Like the front where fresh water meets sea water at the confluence of a great river entering the ocean, modern-style old houses stand side by side with high-rises of various generations, displaying a rich and towering cross-section of urban landscape. Fragments of history mingle with bits of everyday life, presenting a complex and mixed daily scenery.

In 2021, Haikou City initiated a series of cultural projects titled "Pavilions by the Sea," aimed at providing citizens with interdisciplinary and intellectually engaging public entertainment spaces. As one of the 16 coastal pavilions, "Mountain of the Sky" has become the second new urban landmark built at the northern end of Haikou Bay. Facing the southwest coast, the Sou Fujimoto Architects crafted an undulating, continuous ring-shaped roof with an irregular, curved surface shell structure made of thin concrete. Invited by Aranya and the operators, Juanzhong Bookstore and Yishan Children's Bookstore, we designed a space for reading and relaxation for the citizens of Haikou under this expansive roof.

Located in the southern suburbs of Chengdu, Dayuan Central Park used to be an abandoned landfill site until the 1990s. In response to the southward expansion of Chengdu's urbanization, the area was restored into an ecologically-friendly urban park through soil improvement. One of the sunken courtyards is planted with various vegetation, forming a three-dimensional green screen.

When “in the PARK” reached out to us, their multi-brand boutique on Anfu road had been in operation for three years and a half. While their brand identity and architecture had become increasingly coherent, they encountered some functional issues in the physical store space. They planned to, within the shortest timescale and leanest construction manageable, extract as much productive potential of the store as possible: maximize the overall quality of the space, diversify the modes of display, expand the storage capacity, improve shopping routes, optimize the lighting, and so on. Picture the store at the time as a back alley in the urban center of a rapidly modernizing city: limited land (store floor plan) faced with continuing population (SKU) boom and increasing needs (diversifying brands and products) of its citizens. With misplaced items like packaging materials all over the space, the storage and merchandising were eating into each other. The brands, yet to be integrated, competed for limited display capacity.
