Seneca Valley School District, Ehrman Crest Elementary and Middle School / CannonDesign

Ehrman Crest Elementary and Middle School is a learning space that dares to explore what can happen when learning spaces are designed more like children’s museums. The result is an entirely new type of school that activates learning everywhere and gives students unparalleled agency to curate their educational journey. From the genesis of this project, Seneca Valley School District set out to explore if PK12 environments could become more compelling, relevant, engaging, and successful if they emulated children’s museums. The hope was this emulation would create a more rewarding and empowered learning experience for students. There was clear recognition this would require a departure from traditional school buildings that are often designed in ways that dictate learning.

The new Student Center at Western Michigan University (WMU) is a beacon of inclusion. Located on lands historically occupied by Ojibwe, Odawa and Bodewadmi nations, the building is designed to be a student-centered gathering place that champions belonging and honors the roots of Native American heritage embedded throughout the site.

Kirkland Ranch Academy of Innovation (KRAI) represents a radical new approach to fueling innovation and economic investment. Guided by input from the suburban Tampa community, the high school was designed to be a vessel of impact for students and the local economy. It offers an advanced Career Technical Education (CTE), focusing on interactive learning that teaches skills more than theory—arming students with the competencies needed to successfully transition from high school to careers, or into college and beyond.

Cancer cases and deaths in India have doubled from 1900 to 2016, and one of the main reasons for that staggering statistic is the lack of access to cancer treatment. The Tata Medical Center was created to change this reality, acting as a beacon of hope for patients in India and across Southeast Asia. Already, clinical research done by the center’s Senior Pediatric Consultant and Director of Translational Cancer Research has increased childhood cancer survival rates in Kolkata from 65 percent in 2014 to 80 percent in 2019.

They enroll nearly half our country’s college students and act as an affordable and accessible gateway into higher education and the workforce. Ohlone College’s Fremont campus—located about 40 miles outside of San Francisco—is a key part of the higher education system within California’s Bay Area. To better prepare local students to seize the region’s in-demand jobs, we partnered with Anderson Brulé Architects and the college to design its new Academic Core.

York University, Canada’s third-largest university, created a second student center on campus, designed to respond to the changing needs of York’s large and diverse community. The project is the result of a 2013 referendum in which the student body voted in favor of a second building devoted solely to student space. The referendum secured the highest voter turnout in the history of Canadian post-secondary institutions, with approximately 90% of students voting in favor.

Children are a segment of the population with essentially zero political power. Any power they do hold is by proxy. The process and resulting solution for Rockford Public Schools’ new K-5 prototype school pivots this dynamic, designing with students rather than for them. This architecture is community. During discovery meetings with the school principal, the design team learned the district holds “morning briefings” with their students, many of whom have disadvantageous, difficult and even traumatic home lives. The briefings are designed to help students release any negative energy they may hold, so they can best take in new information and collaborate with peers throughout the day.

Concept design and medical planning for Koc University’s Medical Sciences Campus, located in Istanbul’s Topkapi district, was prepared in collaboration with Cannon Design. From the early stages of the project, design workshops were organized with representatives of different parties, including doctors, nurses, professors and the management team. In addition to the concept design and medical planning, Kreatif Architects also carried out the revisions that became necessary as the planning permission was altered following the completion of the first stage.
