‘Cloaked’ is an abode design intervention, monolithically pitched into a tightly knit urban setting. It is enclosed on all sides by an overpowering city fabric. The design was incorporated into a challenging triangular site profile with acute angles at two of its corners. Whilst two of its edges faces vehicular roads, an edifice engulfs its third. The western corner manifests the highest point on site, surrounded by running pavements and roads along its periphery. The terrain gradually slopes down along it’s northern edge from west to east.

The fact that the center was meant for therapy and wellness but had to be designed in a busy, noisy, polluted node in the city was the challenge. What struck us most when we visited the location was the presence of a huge Canon Ball tree (a sacred tree by many accounts), which defined the character of the site. The site was also flanked by a very busy road which forms an important artery in the city’s road network.

The site for the project measured 60x40. The requirement was to build a 30 bed dialysis center. The unique feature of the site was that it was adjacent to an ancient South Indian Temple which was revered by the neighborhood for both its architectural presence and religious value. The context in that sense was atypical of a generic urban setting. The position that we took was to make a sensitive intervention into the context, we looked at the building as a backdrop to the existing scenario with the temple as the main protagonist.

The house is designed on a plot measuring 45’x 90’. The plot is located in a typical Indian neighbourhood flanking a busy street. The dense residential fabric of the neighbourhood, proximity of the neighbours and the busy street in front prompted us to conceive an introverted building. Diagrammatically, the program of the house was laid out in the form an ‘H-shaped plan’ that wraps around a courtyard such that each arm of the ‘H’ flanks the courtyard. The open to sky courtyard, not only becomes the point of interest and activity within the house but also represents the ‘outside’ within the introverted house.

The context didn’t allow for too much interaction, hence the design required us to create a dynamic interaction between the spaces within the house. Transitional areas between the public and private spaces help separate functions and enables intermingling of spatial volumes.

Typically the commercial complex as a ‘type’ is conceived as a generic glass box or clad with standard materials like ACP, the consequence of such surface articulation results in clichéd products. Keeping identity and experience as our core issues we conceived an envelope that questions this very cliché of an inert glass box. By altering the conventional wall section, i.e. the typical floor, sill and lintel heights and constantly varying them along the length of the building the intention was to alter the horizontal reading of the elevation.
