Bovenbouw Architectuur and ono architectuur designed a communication center for the storage of low and medium-level radioactive waste in Dessel, Belgium. To remain relevant throughout the 300-year process required to decrease the radioactivity, the building must be able to adapt to unforeseeable changes over the centuries. Aiming for dialogue and opportunities to play the widest possible role, we proposed a building consisting of two parts; an imposing structure that floats like a table more than 12m above the ground in which exhibition spaces are located, and an airy infill below that accommodates the multifaceted program of spaces, halls and offices.

On a very shallow plot between high apartment buildings, the house offers an exciting living solution. The building typology blends a building with an industrial character and a mansion, both building types characteristic of the neighborhood.

Its western side is characterized by a chamfered corner marking the axis shift of Londenstraat. The eastern corner marks the connection with the Kattendijkdok-Oostkaai and the Cadix area, however with a less dramatic gesture. The city block was designed in collaboration with Sergison Bates Architects and Bulk Architecten.

When designing the care home, we wanted to contribute to the success of the masterplan in which it is situated. Our approach was to enliven and charge the passage underneath the residential care centre. Instead of cycling along a large building, you ride right through it. This passage is formally enhanced in the building, so the public character becomes clearly tangible. Furthermore, the front facade is lifted along the street side, creating visibility towards the green courtyard. In the back, the restaurant acts as an independent ground floor pavilion, which carefully positions itself between the buildings along the street and the recreational area of the allotment gardens at the back.

We regard renovations as exercises in empathy. In the renovation of the eclectic buildings in the Leysstraat in Antwerp, we used a lot of empathy to give a nineteenth century building a second breath. Behind the flamboyant, eclectic façade, a whole series of uninteresting rooms were hidden. In the design we try to eliminate the schizophrenia between a masterly façade and a meager interior.

The police station designed for the municipality of Schoten is a study in informality and approachability. It begins at the urban design level. Instead of highhandedly appropriating its spot, the police station places itself at the service of public space. The L-shaped building is pushed back to the rearmost edge of the large plot available and helps to define a new square.

Two elements dictate the interventions. First, there is Destelheide as a remarkable composition of buildings by architect Felix. A composition in a brutalist architectural language, monolithically constructed in prefab concrete elements. On the other hand, this composition is played out against the surrounding landscape, a beautiful, south facing slope. In this scheme concrete and landscape are once again the main protagonists. All interventions are composed of concrete elements and all have a close relationship with the slope.

The alley provides a direct connection from the street to the garden. The new extension is not an addition to the old house. We propose a second house. This back house is a mirror image, a twin to the front house. It's a brick house again, with a pitched tiled roof, living space on ground floor and some rooms higher up, and a chimney and a staircase once more.
