Eaglemont House explores the relationship between a home, its environment, and its inhabitants. The project reimagines a single-storey Edwardian house that had previously been compromised by a poorly conceived extension. This outdated addition was dark, south-facing, and featured an uninviting, damp outdoor entertaining space due to its poor orientation. Recognising the site's potential and the original dwelling's charm, the design replaces the extension with a new, light-filled addition that fosters a healthier, more connected living environment, while embracing natural light and the surrounding landscape.

It became apparent, through early investigations, that the resultant design would likely be heavily compromised due to a number of inherent limitations in the house and site, the most significant being the solar orientation of the allotment.

Imagine if your home could feel like living in a garden pavilion. At BENT Annexe II, it does! By retaining the character-rich front section of the home and creating a new, light-filled addition to the rear, this family of four plus Pippa the groodle are surrounded by lush greenery and can effortlessly utilize their backyard. As is the case with many period homes, the existing house was charming with high ceilings and ornate details. As is also the case with many period homes, the living areas felt disconnected from the backyard due to a series of rooms, such as the kitchen, storage rooms, and a toilet which were tacked onto the back in a lean-to. We resisted the temptation to knock down the lean-to and add a new open-plan living area stretching from boundary to boundary to the back and opening onto the garden for two key reasons.

Australians are living longer and enjoying health and fitness long into their retirement, so isn't it time we created homes to support and enable this growing demographic? One of our passions here at Bent Architecture is designing for ageing in place. With empathetic design strategies, we can enable people to live independently well into their senior years in a home they love and feel comfortable in. As our population ages, designing homes with ageing in place and accessible design principles in mind will mean homes won't have to be retrofitted to help with mobility issues, require a lot of maintenance or feel overwhelming for elderly owners.

This recent expansion of the Werribee Mausoleum creates 170 new resting places for deceased loved-ones in the Werribee cemetery. The project comprises two distinct structures; a new garden Mausoleum to the east of the original building, containing 140 outward-facing crypts (doubling the original capacity); and a series of Family Mausolea to the west of the original building, comprising four intimate family rooms and chapels which accommodate five or ten resting places each. The new additions flank the original structure designed by BAU and expanded on the symbolism and monumentality of the original design. The dramatic Corbusian pre-cast roof form is extended over the new additions, but a space is reserved between new and existing at ground level; a punctuation mark.
