The design by Bates Smart stands as both an integral civic space and an enduring symbol of Australia. The embassy’s architecture, landscape, and commissioned artworks combine to embed an enduring relationship between Australia and the United States. The Embassy respects and upholds the character of the city of Washington D.C., completing Scott Circle and addressing the street axes to 16th Street and the White House and Massachusetts Avenue, commonly referred to as Embassy Row.

The new Adina Apartment Hotel Melbourne Southbank is the first cross-laminated timber (CLT) high-rise hotel in Australia. Utilising the latest in timber construction technology this project attains new levels in sustainable design. Approximately 5,300 tonnes of CLT were used to add 10 levels to an existing commercial building, offsetting nearly 4,200 of CO2 from the atmosphere. CLT Pushes Urban Adaptive Reuse Even Further The existing commercial office building built in 1989, was able to accommodate an extension of six levels with the use of concrete framed construction. The design challenge Bates Smart faced was how to surpass this, in order to deliver a hotel with 220 rooms.

2 Bligh Street Renovation / Bates Smart

Two major exterior renovations have changed the architectural expression of 2 Bligh Street since the building was completed in 1958. Its most recent, by Bates Smart in 2018, returns the building to its original modernist elegance while exemplifying contemporary sustainability principles. Architects Stephenson and Turner designed 2 Bligh Street—originally named Temple House—in the International Style. The building’s finely proportioned, expressed structural grid was accentuated by recessed infill glazing and blue tiled masonry spandrel panels. Heavy, angular aluminium spandrels were added in the 1980s as structural rectifications and as aesthetic updates, responding to changed preferences for a more solid expression. These modifications, as well as the natural evolution of Sydney’s architecture, put 2 Bligh Street at odds with its surroundings, composed of taller premium office buildings with strong modern pedigrees.

Our aim was to create a uniquely “Canberran” hotel that responds both to Griffin’s original vision and its unique position as the gateway to the Canberra Airport. After studying Griffin’s plan of Canberra we worked with his geometry of circles and axes to create a gateway to the new airport terminal. The interior is aesthetically integrated with the architectural expression of the hotel, creating a holistic approach to the building expression.

After many years and numerous attempts by other architects Bates Smart’s innovative design unlocked the potential to build over an existing structure. The central lift core was relocated to the perimeter of the building creating an open flexible floorplate. A series of steel trusses allow the building to cantilever over the existing structure and transfer loads.
