The site is situated on the eastern bank of West Lake, just a hundred steps from the water's edge. The retail space is well-proportioned with two street-facing facades, while the main entrance is tucked within the mall. The spatial strategy is clear and concise: a continuous curved wall gracefully anchors the entrance to the streetscape on the east, naturally demarcating the front and back of house.

A slowly forming community - From 2016 to 2023, we had six design projects in No.88, 3rd Ceramics Street, including architectural renovation, interior design, and installation design. Although it is located in the same plot, each renovation is relatively independent due to the different design time stages and users. Looking back at the current, design is a process of repeated collage and superposition. Due to the inability to make a unified plan, there is no essential difference between this place and other spontaneously renovated spaces in the city.

Bridge and Stone - Hangzhou is characterized by its numerous bridges. The "Qiantang County Records" states: "The residents of Qiantang are densely populated, with bridges every hundred steps and ten paces, with tracks and bridges for passage." In the Yuan Dynasty, Marco Polo wrote in his travelogue: "Traveling in Hangzhou, surrounded by various waters, there are twelve thousand stone bridges." We interpreted such bridge structures as symbols of connection and communication, equality and breadth. With this theme in mind, the space is conceived as a bridge between the global brand and its Hangzhou context. When entering the space, the huge water sink in the center is a concrete manifestation of the concept. People can stroll or stop by "the bridge," where the water is flowing from the tap and the rectangular stone slabs bridging it create a dynamic context for "connection."

This slanting street connects Dashilar and Liulichang zone, and once gathered many bookstores and guild halls, it has a profound historical background and literary style. After nearly ten years of cultural preservation renovation, Yangmeizhu Xiejie street has been renovated and updated to fit modern daily life. On the other side of the road, there is a 1928 built German heritage castle which has wall surface with fine sand mixed pebble and a tower with steep roof. It used to be Ziwen Song's residence and now serves as a centre for the elderly.

The factory
Comparing to those iconic big factory buildings with Bauhaus style in 798 zone, this factory is not so special and obvious. Its history is impossible to trace back, and tenants afterwards also made a lot of add-on in both interior and exterior space. It also reduced the original form of massing which is more and more ambiguous. The plan is almost a C shape, with an enclosed courtyard. The interior space is naturally split to 3 independent rectangular rooms for different tenants.
