In the small municipality of Schönaich in Baden-Württemberg, a model building for affordable and refugee housing demonstrates how architecture can combine flexibility, sustainability, and social quality. Designed by Atelier Kaiser Shen, a clearly structured layout with load-bearing cross-laminated timber walls and an external steel frame enables flexible use, allowing long-term adaptability.

Pfaffenhofen is a small village near Heilbronn. It is characterized by an idyllic setting with a church, and half-timbered houses dating from the 16th and 17th centuries in the center of the village, with vineyards rising picturesquely in the background. The village center is now being redensified with a residential building in a cubature typical for the region, which is extraordinary in several respects. For one thing, the way it is built reflects the client's mindset and area of work. As far as possible the aim was to realize a building that was ideally made from natural and renewable raw materials which can be re-introduced into the natural cycle.

The concept of expanding and extending buildings, is once again state-of-the-art as firstly it fulfills the wish for continuity and secondly expanding offers a pragmatic approach to energy and material inputs. This concept was used as the basis for the renovation of the Ingerkingen multi-purpose hall. The architects were less interested in the original shape but rather the potential for further construction. Since part of the building could be simply and functionally integrated into the new concept, Atelier Kaiser Shen considered it obvious to retain the original. To reduce demolition work to a minimum, the foundations, the floor slab, the ceilings and the walls in the northern and western section were integrated into the planning. In this way, a total of 60 percent of the built mass was preserved.

At first glance, the Micro Courtyard house seems out of place. Perched between four sets of stoplights, it stands upon a traffic island in Ludwigsburg, a city near Stuttgart. On a given day, thousands of vehicles pass by and pedestrians walk hurriedly across the intersection. The Micro Courtyard house is a new approach to dealing with “living in minimal space”. Despite being in the midst of a busy crossroad, it provides high privacy by separating adeptly the living space from the outside world.
