Immersed in the City - The Relocation and Expansion Project of Wuning Middle School in Putuo District, Shanghai — The relocation and expansion project of Wuning Middle School (now name as The Second High School Affiliated to Tongji University) is situated at 186 Dongxin Road, Putuo District. This site is located within the Inner Ring area of Shanghai, surrounded by densely populated residential neighborhoods. To the north, it borders directly on Light Rail Line 3 and the Inner Ring Highway. This location experiences heavy traffic volumes and features high building density. After arguments by the relevant urban planning authorities, it has been decided to relocate the school from the northwest to the southeast side of the site through a land swap strategy. This new strategy will provide efficient space for a modern secondary school with an expanded capacity of 40 classes.

This increasingly complex project emerged from an interactive process and key breakthroughs by both the government and architects — through ongoing coordination and integration, architects drive the joint renewal of urban and educational spaces. It represents a process of architects' proactive intervention and comprehensive resolution of urban architectural renewal needs. The project site features a narrow and elongated shape, with Kunshan Experimental Primary School to the east, adjacent to Kunshan Industrial Technology Research Institute to the west. And it connects two major urban green spaces, Dayu Lake Park and Kunshan Forest Park, at its north and south ends.

Kunshan Urban Ecological Forest Park is located northwest of Kunshan City, approximately 4 km from the city center, covering a total area of 3,150 m2. It is a city park open to the public freely. On the left side of the south entrance, along the river, there was originally a sales office with a site area of approximately 1,310 m2. To make good use of this land, the owner decided to build a new visitor center here. The new building will be used for comprehensive services, park and urban administration. It was also expected that the building could be integrated with the landscape. We have also noticed that there is a big green space to the north of the site, rather unattractive, so we decided to include this space in the design for visitors.

It stands beside a winding path that starts from the foot of the mountain. It connects the typical boundless northern mountains, also the community in the valley on the other side of the ridge line. When residents or visitors go up along the winding path, this art center will greet them first. Its east and south sides face the mountain road below it and enjoy a view of the continuous mountains. Its north side oversees the villas spreading down along the hillside. Its west side is next to the community and acts as an end of the street. Another challenging thing here is to provide enough surface for kids to have outdoor activities. How to have classrooms as many as possible without losing their quality? How to define an outside space for the activities? We start to develop the project by taking both the two questions that seem not related.

This road is of pleasant scale and luxurious greenery, crowded with small retails. One can sense a strong living atmosphere here. The Pocket Plaza in lane 309 sits in the middle of Yongjia Road. Taking the opportunity of old quarter renovation, Xuhui District Government decided to dismantle two rows of shabby residences with fire hazards and transform the site into a public urban space. Based on observation, we believe that an open plaza with appropriate scale would be most necessary and suitable for this neighborhood.

September 22, 2018 witnessed the simultaneous opening of three offline new retail stores of Yitiao.tv in three shopping malls in Shanghai, followed by its ranking the No. 1 on the list of the most popular household commodities in Shanghai (from dianping.com) one month later. The concept of new retail was proposed by Jacky Ma in 2016, which was supposed to be the outcome of the combination of online, offline retails and logistics. Because the benefits arising from the Internet demographic dividend to the natural fans growth of e-commerce will hit a bottleneck over time. Under such a circumstance, Yitiao.tv decided to shift its business to offline markets, just as what the founder of Yitiao.tv said in an interview, “According to my personal estimation, the cost for getting a loyal customer through offline retail is only 10% of that through online retail”.
