The "Stepped Well House" draws inspiration from the dense, organic neighbourhoods of Bangalore, where homes evolve over time to suit narrow sites and compact conditions rather than being designed by architects. In these spaces, staircases, originally intended for access, have transformed into dynamic, interactive areas that integrate greenery and landscape, shaping the character of the dwelling.

Akkalkot, a town in the Solapur district of Maharashtra, is characterized by its dense urban neighborhoods. The residence sits on a compact 825-square-foot plot, measuring just 25 feet by 33 feet. These neighborhoods feature traditional vernacular houses built using exposed black basalt stone and bricks. These homes often incorporate central open-to-sky courtyards and thick common walls that provide insulation from the harsh climate. Our design draws direct inspiration from this local architectural vernacular.

Situated in the town of Tiptur within the Tumkur district, this residence occupies a corner plot measuring 70’x40’ in a relatively new layout, devoid of immediate neighboring structures and architectural context/character. Addressing concerns related to privacy and security, the house incorporates a protective random rubble black granite stone wall that surrounds it, which is sourced from a nearby local granite quarry, resembling a fortification. Within this enclosure, the house block is positioned. A deliberate interplay of materials and spaces defines the area between the stone wall and the house.

The 70’ x 40’ plot is in a dense urban neighborhood facing a narrow South park. The primary residents are students and professionals. The density and narrow setbacks of the surrounding buildings resulted in sections that drew light from above. Interconnected volumes allow light to penetrate through the building. These volumes become internal courts that house common activities such as reading and dining while also forming pause points along the circulation of the building.

Architecture is about blurring boundaries between the inside and outside and establishing a co-relationship between humans, nature, and the built environment. The site is situated in a tight urban context with houses on all three sides. In response to the context, we aim to evolve a design language that maximizes the use of natural light, ventilation, and accessible green spaces within the home. This approach creates a more porous environment, giving rise to a series of connections and fostering interaction, further enhancing the users' way of life. It's an attempt to transform the space into a place, making the house into a home that celebrates life.

The site for this multifamily housing is located in JP Nagar, Bangalore, Karnataka, and it measures 60'x40', constituting a tight urban plot. The housing is designed to accommodate five families. The initial brief was to create the outer skin or facade for the building. However, we went beyond the given brief and proposed a building screen that transcended the concept of a mere facade. We deemed it essential to envision the facade as a living element - "a breathing enclosure," and convinced the clients to share this perspective.
