Located in a tropical region with abundant sunlight and rainfall, Ga.o House is a hybrid project that merges residential and office functions within a single structure. Beyond fulfilling basic usage needs, the design team set more ambitious goals: prioritizing the use of natural and recycled materials, optimizing energy efficiency, harnessing renewable resources (solar, wind, water), and minimizing carbon emissions throughout the building's lifecycle. The project embodies an effort to align with Vietnam's growing commitment to sustainable urban development.

However, their previous home is a small apartment building with little space for growing plants, and they even grow vegetables in their bedroom.
There are many housing projects with small plots of land in Vietnam, mostly in urban areas due to the high population density. These land lots are suitable for the income majority. However, its narrowness comes with many weaknesses. The two biggest problems are lack of light and ventilation; especially when combined with the extremely hot and humid tropical climate. Therefore, these projects require Architects’ solutions to solve these problems.

Therefore, we are required to comply with strict regulations of Hoi An People's Committee on planning, architecture, and construction density of Hoi An People's Committee. The object is to design a house for 5 members of 3 generations. The design itself has to be suitable for the modern lifestyle as well as living close to nature; it is not following the ancient design of Hoi An ancient town, but also has to have basic features of indigenous architecture. Especially, the eldest person in the house, who is the father of the host, has suffered from illness and difficulty in walking.

There has been a wide range of house designing and building rules that exist many years ago in Vietnam and East Asia, particularly the Feng Shui rule. This sometimes made architects struggle with their design ideas. For instance, building the house of the wealthy or the front door and the headboard of the bed must be suitable for the owner’s ages. Moreover, the living room is always facing the main facade, which is the first place you have to go through when you want to enter the house, etc.

After more than 30 years living and working in Europe, the Project Owners are over 60 years old and want to return to Vietnam to enjoy the rest of their life. Together, they and I have chosen a location to make their wish come true. We chose a 180 sq. meters piece of land at the foot of Son Tra Mountain, which is a treasure of Da Nang city. This land has a good location, next to a small stream and near the beach. This place has a cool climate that is different from the city area. They want to have a house for a couple with two bedrooms and everything should be neat and tidy. However, the old couple is still working in Europe and cannot move to Viet Nam as least in 3 to 5 years.

She is a landscape architect and is currently working for a large Australian landscape design company. She shared that her parents in Vietnam were planning to build a new house for them and her brother to live. Since her parents have been building the house many times but they have never felt satisfactory, this time she wanted to find a good design consultant to design a new home that suits the needs to use and is aesthetically pleasing. Through careful study, she came to us, she liked the way we did through our projects posted on ArchDaily. We exchanged a lot of ideas and had many common points: Everything is really simple, clean, with more areas for green space.

Starting up with a small amount of money, they came to me with the desire to build a small coffee shop in an alley in the central street. They didn`t have much money. They even had to call for the co-operation from another start-up project in the fashion sector to have enough capital for the construction of the project. So in the construction process, everything must be cheap. But what they wanted in this work was the absolute impression at the first sight - small, but impressive.
