The Arthur Residence was designed for a finish carpenter and emergency room doctor from South Africa with a passion for gardening. The couple was seeking a modest sanctuary with ample space for privacy and respite from the outside world. They selected an infill site near downtown Regina, in a mature neighborhood where small bungalows are rapidly being replaced by conventional homes. In contrast, the Arthurs wanted to challenge this development with a thoughtful alternative.

A mixed-use redevelopment on former railway lands, Pumphouse demonstrates how heritage, site, and budget challenges can inspire innovation, sparking new ideas about attainable housing design and city-building. Originally constructed in 1906 to improve the city's water supply system, the James Avenue Pumping Station closed in 1986 and was slated for demolition. After 17 failed attempts to revive the building within Winnipeg's Exchange District National Historic Site, 5468796 Architecture convinced an existing client to connect with the City-as-owner to take on an unsolicited conceptual design proposal and financial pro-forma, leading to the building's successful preservation – and new life. The project approaches the existing Pumping Station as a "found object", integrating an office and restaurant within while flanking the heritage building with two residential blocks that push the potentials of multi-family housing.

In a prairie-value, conservative-minded early 20th-century Winnipeg suburb composed primarily of large-scale, traditional-style dwellings, our clients sought a home in which to age in place and enjoy a high degree of both airiness and privacy. Veil House is arranged on a loose nine-square grid organized around a central courtyard. The residence is configured as a series of free-flowing open living spaces, (living, family, dining, kitchen, circulation) framed by solid utility blocks, (washroom, laundry, fireplace, storage, appliances). This interplay eliminates the need for walls and doors. The unique configuration allows all living spaces to be spatially defined while also visually and acoustically connected. Double height spaces – sloped ceilings (kitchen + family room), infinite ceiling (dining room), double volume (living room), and open volume (courtyard) blur the grid in sections and create a private primary bedroom on the upper floor.

The City of Calgary required a downtown parkade to free up multiple downtown lots for development. Understanding the likelihood of building’s future obsolescence, municipal officials also wanted a creative solution that would justify the expenditure now and in the future. And so, the city asked 5468796 Architecture in collaboration with Kasian Architecture Interior Design and Planning to design a 510-stall parkade that could be easily converted into an office, light industrial, or residential building. The project site – adjacent to the new Calgary Library, Calgary City Hall, and the Studio Bell, (the National Music Centre) – included an unbuildable easement for an underground light rail tunnel, cutting through the middle of the project site and representing what the city determined as a 20% loss in the buildable area.

Bloc_10 is a multi-family housing project that strives to re-imagine and re-invent the market-driven condominium. On the site of a former gas station in Winnipeg’s River Heights neighbourhood, the developer wanted a modestly priced building designed and constructed within 12 months. The resulting three-storey, 10-unit condominium project was modeled after the ‘white-box’ concept: each buyer purchases an unfinished unit with basic plumbing, heating and electrical systems. Buyers can decide which rooms they would like distributed on each level and they can personalize their finishes to their own taste and budget.

Located adjacent to Lake Winnipeg in the community of Dunnottar, this 4-season cottage was conceived as a modest home away from home for a family of four. A long, linear volume housing the client’s requested program folds onto itself as a means to open views, define private exterior space, capture sunlight and weave around existing trees.

"The Cube" is an open-air performance venue set against the backdrop of historic warehouses in Winnipeg’s Exchange District. The design commission gained through an invited competition, recognizes that the stage typically functions as such during a very limited time season, and questioned what opportunities the venue could provide during the rest of the year. In its final rendition the stage is articulated as a multi-functional environment that shifts from a vibrant performance space to an ephemeral, glowing, interactive pavilion and focal point.
