The idea of a home in a large rectangular room isn't appealing to us. The design evokes the iconic features of the familiar rooftop, veranda, screen, and garden, drawing inspiration from the existential era of architecture. A narrow walk from the front yard leads to the main door of the home, discreetly located behind the screen. Ascending the stairs, the living space is spacious, opening out to the backyard and the sky above.

This project entailed the comprehensive renovation and reconfiguration of both the inside and exterior of a residence constructed in the 2000s, tailored to accommodate the preferences, comfort, and character of a family that values traditional painting and artisanal lacquerware. The house's antiquity and several modifications, together with changes in ownership, rendered the creation of a new functional space within the existing structure a formidable challenge, despite its modest size. The refurbished residence necessitated six bedrooms, an expansive kitchen, and a primary living space for familial engagement and leisure.

In Vietnam's accelerating urbanization, particularly in Ho Chi Minh City, the proliferation of new residential quarters has alleviated acute housing shortages yet frequently perpetuated obsolete typologies. Many developments recycle standardized house models from two to three decades past, failing to address contemporary demands adequately for spatial comfort, natural ventilation, daylight penetration, aesthetic sophistication, and personalized habitation.

With several changes in Vietnamese social policy, warehouses and factories are no longer permitted in residential neighborhoods, and authorities compel the structures to be dismantled or transformed to other fitting uses. Completely renovating an office building or apartment complex necessitates significant sums of money that are beyond the project investor's means. Furthermore, with a long project duration, it will be difficult for investors to recover funds. As a result of our discussions and consultations, we were able to persuade the investor to renovate the old structure, implement damage repair and renewal options, and upgrade and transform the project into a new one.

The model's 2-meter setback, 14-meter maximum dwelling length, and maximum roof peak height are fulfilled. The project benefits from a vast garden for food and fruit trees, including mango, guava, and grapefruit. This garden brings back memories of grapefruit wafting over the maternal home's eaves and is a beautiful place for family meals and wine.

The 140THL House is part of a larger initiative, including a succession of compact urban dwelling projects we are undertaking now. Due to the fast economic and demographic growth in Saigon, the availability of urban space has been increasingly constrained, resulting in a heightened sense of congestion and inadequate ventilation. One crucial matter that necessitates thorough examination and serves as a standard for most of our modest housing initiatives is optimizing green space use, harnessing wind flow, and fostering a harmonious integration with the natural environment.

In Saigon's urban environment context, this idea is a proposal for constructing houses fitted to the typical long and thin architectural style. Due to the compounding impacts of economic growth and urban development, Saigon's population density and urbanization are rising faster every year. As a result, many people want to live in a place that is near to nature and feels peaceful and rejuvenating, where they can enjoy the sun's rays and the caress of the wind.
