This project is a house planned within a rural settlement located in an urbanization control area. The surrounding context is characterized by generous single-story farmhouse dwellings. However, due to the site's favorable location, land subdivision has recently accelerated, and an increasing number of parcels are being sold as speculative housing developments or ready-built homes. These houses, driven by profitability and ease of sale, tend to maximize building coverage ratios and are subdivided internally into increasing numbers of nLDK units. As a result, the neighborhood has become denser, with deteriorating daylighting and ventilation conditions, confining residents within overcrowded and inflexible interiors.

This project is for a new office and residence for a construction company with a 50-year history in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture. The client owned two large warehouses near the site, both overflowing with unused timber—mostly surplus wood ordered in bulk by the previous generation, who had been a carpenter, along with reclaimed lumber collected during demolition. Although there were no clear plans for its use, the material had continued to accumulate year after year, too valuable to discard. Many construction companies and lumberyards across Japan hold similar stockpiles of timber lying dormant in warehouses.

The house is on one of the plots of a large developed field in the Japanese countryside. The site was surrounded by long, narrow, distorted roads that had existed for a long time, and the land had a deformed flagpole shape. As a result, variously angled property boundaries and buildings surrounded the site, and no matter where one stood on the site, one felt a tenuous relationship with the neighboring land. This project attempted to create a new relationship with the outside, including the neighboring land, by designing the distance between the building and the site boundary on a deformed flagpole lot with distorted contours.
