KOSMALT is originally the largest workers' dormitory of the Košice steelworks VSŽ, built in the 1960s according to the design of architects Ladislav Greč and Róbert Kandrík. The name of the building refers to a type of enameled steel, the production of which was specific to the local steelworks. The building is located in the Terasa housing estate in Košice and, thanks to its distinctive silhouette and characteristic façade, forms a dominant feature of the urban structure.

It is the personal story of its inhabitant: a childhood in the countryside, a move to the city, and a return to their origins that does not seek to reconstruct the past but to reinvent it.
Facing a vast golf course in a low-density neighborhood with abundant vegetation, the house was born from the desire to establish a constant connection with a high-quality outdoor space. The central inspiration comes from two clear references: the traditional portico form and the Brutalist logic of the Paulista school, synthesized in the idea of the house as "the machine of its own construction." The guiding concept is that the structure does not merely support, but is inhabited: every space is the result of a structural decision, generating atmospheres that evoke different emotions and engage those who live in them.

Within a consolidated urban context, the building occupies two opposing plots that border distinct marginal planes. By taking advantage of the significant difference in elevation between these planes, part of the building is elevated, creating a qualified void beneath it. This space allows for visual and physical continuity—an urban permeability that enables a clear understanding of the built fabric within this section of the city. Consequently, the design invites the possibility of crossing the block, offering an expanded perception of urban space—now fluid, and deliberately mediating between the human and urban scales—thus contributing to a logical comprehension of the city.

The design sought to celebrate the building's essence by leaving the concrete beams and columns exposed, highlighting the structural materiality. At the same time, it integrated spaces to provide a fluid living experience tailored to contemporary daily life. While the original structure of the staircase was preserved, it received a new metal handrail and guardrail, turning it into a central element that defines the project's identity. The overlapping of the metal meshes that form the staircase guardrail creates a moiré effect, which gives the project its name.
