Located in the Berkeley Hills, on a steep incline facing panoramic views of the San Francisco Bay, the design of this three-level house is guided by seismic constraints, topography, micro-climate, sun path, and the property’s protected oak trees. To address the risks of earthquakes and landslides, the house is built on grade beams resting on concrete piles embedded in bedrock, avoiding the complexity and expense of excavation and retaining walls. The design includes the first use of residential seismic damper frames which slow the response of the structure in a seismic event and allow it to withstand the maximum predicted earthquake with minimal damage.

As increasing enrollment, fiscal constraints, and decades of underinvestment challenge public universities across California, the University of California, Berkeley models cost-effective, high-quality design by employing a private developer mindset. Berkeley Way West is a new hybrid academic and speculative office building located in the dense, bustling heart of Berkeley. The new building houses the University’s Psychology, Global Health, and Education departments, as well as numerous private companies, including Microsoft. By leasing space to private tenants, the University meets current space demands, supports revenue goals, and anticipates future growth. Berkeley Way West will eventually be occupied entirely by UC Berkeley.

The architecture borrows from the machine qualities of the railway to echo the former land use, and blends it with the character of the current residential neighborhood. Corrugated metal wraps down the roof and wall facing the former train line, while the front of the house expresses the pitch of the roof that ties it to more traditional house forms. The interior is an open expanse that also recalls a large, open station with a free plan and high vaulted ceilings.

This home on a hillside site looking across San Francisco Bay to a panoramic view of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge is a rebuild following a tragic fire on the site. The original house was built in 1952 by Berkeley architect Henry Hill for the family of a local lighting fabricator who collaborated with many important Bay Area artists, artisans and architects, from early masters such as Julia Morgan and Bernard Maybeck, to the region’s mid-century modern masters. With this legacy, the original home was filled with works of art and craft from local craftspeople and the family’s travels in Asia and the Middle East, much of which was lost in the fire.

Baran Studio’s project was to design a single-family home on a lot behind an existing home. The new structure is conceived as a modern interpretation of a traditional form. A simple gabled form takes its cue from the front house and neighborhood which it complements; the pitched roof helps mitigate the shadows cast onto the adjacent west neighbor.

The clients for this Berkeley Hills home were a prominent scientist and his wife. They had recently moved from the east coast and purchased another home I had designed. After a few years in the home, they contacted me to explore their inspiration of building their own home start to finish. We looked for land together and eventually they purchased a double lot with spectacular views in the sloping hills of the East Bay.

Designed by Mack Scogin Merrill Elam Architects, the environmentally sensitive Jean Gray Hargrove Music Library at University of California Berkeley helps alleviate the university’s growing pains since World War II. During the post World War II building boom on the University of California Berkeley campus, an “Arts Quadrangle” was established on a former playing field uphill from Hearst Gymnasium. Quickly, three sides were filled—a fine arts building to the south, an architecture building to the east, and two music buildings, one for classrooms and one a performance hall, to the north. To the west, the quad was left open to a view framed by Hearst Gymnasium and native vegetation to hints of the East Bay and sunsets beyond. Campus building did not stop, however, and the fourth side of the Arts Quadrangle was soon coveted as one of the last unbuilt sites on campus.
