        <![CDATA[<p>In a short but prodigious career Raymond Mathewson Hood (March 29, 1881 &ndash; August 14, 1934) had an outsized influence on twentieth century architecture. Born in Pawtucket,&nbsp;<a href="http://www.archdaily.com/tag/rhode-island">Rhode Island</a>, Hood was the son of a box manufacturer in an affluent Baptist family.[1] He attended&nbsp;<a href="http://www.archdaily.com/tag/brown-university">Brown University</a>&nbsp;before studying at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.archdaily.com/tag/mit">MIT School of Architecture</a>, later graduating from the&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%89cole_des_Beaux-Arts">&Eacute;cole des Beaux-Arts</a>&nbsp;in 1911. While in&nbsp;<a href="http://www.archdaily.com/tag/paris">Paris</a>, Hood met&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Mead_Howells">John Mead Howells</a>, who in 1922 would select him as a partner for the design of the&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tribune_Tower">Chicago Tribune Tower</a>. The team would beat out many more avant-garde entries by the likes of&nbsp;<a href="http://www.archdaily.com/tag/walter-gropius">Walter Gropius</a>,&nbsp;<a href="http://www.archdaily.com/tag/adolf-loos">Adolf Loos</a>, and&nbsp;<a href="http://www.archdaily.com/tag/eliel-saarinen">Eliel Saarinen</a>, with their own&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gothic_Revival_architecture">Neo-Gothic</a>&nbsp;edifice that mimicked the&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rouen_Cathedral">Butter Tower of Rouen Cathedral</a>.</p>]]>

The common thread of Pelli&rsquo;s work is a strong sensitivity to place and environment. Beginning his solo career with the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.archdaily.com/119118/red-building-pelli-clarke-pelli-architects">Pacific Design Center</a>&nbsp;(1975) in&nbsp;<a href="http://www.archdaily.com/tag/los-angeles">Los Angeles</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;shifting&nbsp;through the World Financial Center (1988) (now&nbsp;<a href="http://brookfieldplaceny.com/">Brookfield Place</a>) in New York, to the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.archdaily.com/105895/ad-classics-petronas-towers-cesar-pelli">Petronas Towers</a>&nbsp;(1996) in&nbsp;<a href="http://www.archdaily.com/tag/kuala-lumpur">Kuala Lumpur</a>,&nbsp;<a href="http://www.archdaily.com/country/malaysia">Malaysia</a>, and the now-under-construction,&nbsp;<a href="http://www.archdaily.com/356982/transbay-transit-center-in-san-francisco-pelli-clarke-pelli">Transbay Transit Center</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salesforce_Tower">Salesforce Tower</a>&nbsp;in&nbsp;<a href="http://www.archdaily.com/tag/san-francisco">San Francisco</a>, each project is a unique response to context.</p>]]>

The memorial went on to become among the most recognizable designs in the world, and heralded&nbsp;a sea change for memorial design, breaking with classical conventions and&nbsp;dramatically&nbsp;changing the discourse of a typology.</p>]]>

Devising programmatic elements for five sections of the riverfront, Agence Ter hopes to inject a variety of functions into what is now an underutilized area. In the words of the designers, “The project redefines the space of the bank to create a living interface between neighborhoods and the river, a new width articulating soft transport, ecology, public spaces, activities and economy.”</p>]]>

        <![CDATA[<p dir="ltr">An <a href="http://www.archdaily.com/tag/mvrdv">MVRDV</a>-designed library in <a href="http://www.archdaily.com/tag/tianjin">Tianjin</a> has topped out as part of the city’s Binhai Cultural Centre. The 34,200 square meter (370,000 square foot) building will join four other cultural institutions designed by <a href="http://www.archdaily.com/tag/bernard-tschumi">Bernard Tschumi Architects</a>, <a href="http://www.archdaily.com/office/bing-thom-architects">Bing Thom Architects</a>, HH Design, and <a href="http://www.archdaily.com/office/gmp-architekten">GMP</a> – creating “cultural corridors” – that are part of a GMP-designed masterplan. The library program includes educational facilities, service spaces, book storage, archives, computer rooms, audio rooms, an auditorium, lounge areas, meeting rooms, offices, general reading areas, and those designed specifically for children and the elderly. Tianjin Binhai Library has been designed by MVRDV in collaboration with the <a href="http://frameworks.ced.berkeley.edu/tag/tianjin-urban-planning-and-design-institute/?utm_medium=website&amp;utm_source=archdaily.com" target="_blank">TIanjin Urban Planning and Design Institute</a> (TUPDI).</p>]]>

        <![CDATA[<p dir="ltr">The <a href="http://www.museumoflondon.org.uk/?utm_medium=website&amp;utm_source=archdaily.com" target="_blank">Museum of London</a> has released a shortlist and designs for the <a href="/tag/west-smithfield">West Smithfield</a> International Design Competition, organized by <a href="http://www.archdaily.com/tag/malcolm-reading">Malcolm Reading Consultants</a>. The site, which will be the museum’s future home after outgrowing its place at the <a href="http://www.archdaily.com/tag/barbican">Barbican</a>, is part of <a href="http://www.archdaily.com/tag/london">London</a>’s <a href="http://www.smithfieldmarket.com/?utm_medium=website&amp;utm_source=archdaily.com" target="_blank">Smithfield Market</a> and includes the Smithfield General Market building, the Fish Market, the Red House and the Engine House. Welcoming over a million annual visitors at its current home, the museum’s new facility would allow attendance to double and enable the display of never-before-seen artifacts from the historic collection. The competition was funded by the Mayor of London through a £200,000 grant.</p>]]>

        <![CDATA[<p dir="ltr"><a href="http://www.archdaily.com/tag/pezo-von-ellrichshausen">Pezo von Ellrichshausen</a>’s <a href="/tag/vara-pavilion">Vara Pavilion</a> for the <a href="http://www.archdaily.com/tag/venice-biennale-2016">2016 Venice Biennale</a> is described by the architects as “a series of exteriors within other exteriors.” Breaking down this crypticness, what emerges is a maze-like complex of circles – ten of them – formed with steel, cement, and painted plaster, which collectively create a series of walls, but no roof, thus forming a pavilion that is open to the elements from above. The 324 square meter pavilion’s title, “<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_customary_units?utm_medium=website&amp;utm_source=archdaily.com" target="_blank">vara</a>,” refers to an imprecise and obsolete Spanish unit of measurement, that was employed during the country’s conquering of America to trace and measure cities. Each of circles of the Vara Pavilion is a diameter of the unit, ranging from two to eleven.</p>]]>

        <![CDATA[<p dir="ltr"><a href="http://www.archdaily.com/tag/oma">OMA</a>’s long-awaited conversion of the 16th century <a href="/tag/fondaco-dei-tedeschi">Fondaco dei Tedeschi</a> as a department store is finally complete in <a href="http://www.archdaily.com/tag/venice">Venice</a>. The project was commissioned by Edizione S.r.l., the Benetton family's holding company, in 2009, and will bring comprehensive changes to one of the city’s largest and most recognizable buildings. The Fondaco was first begun in 1228 and is located at the foot of the Rialto Bridge, across from the fish market. With many past lives, it was first used as a trading post for German merchants, later as a customs house under Napoleon, and in the twentieth century, as a post office under Mussolini. Despite numerous and radical structural changes, the building was listed as a 'Monument' in 1987, restricting further alterations.</p>]]>
