Affordable housing has become an increasingly dire global issue. Be it rent or homeownership, the unaffordability of homes has been on the rise. A look at U.S. Census data illustrates a sharp decline in homeownership in recent decades. Although Millennials were the most populous generation by 2019, they only contributed to homeownership at a rate of 47.9%. Contrastingly, Gen-X’s homeownership rate stood at 69%, following the silent generation at 77.8%. Trends of generational decline in homeownership are mirrored in other parts of the world, such as in the U.K. where rates have steadily dropped from 71% in 2003 to 64% by 2018. Many experts point to affordability as a large reason for this decline.
For architects and interior designers, lighting helps to demarcate areas of an interior, albeit subtly, through the intangible medium of light. A space-saving alternative to partitions and walls, lighting can informally subdivide open-plan spaces into zones devoted to different uses – a bar area in a hotel lobby, say, or the kitchen area of a living-room-cum-kitchen.
Modular lighting in particular appeals to designers seeking to delineate different zones, as it’s highly flexible. Since it can be enlarged by adding more components or made smaller by removing some, it allows rooms to be easily reconfigured to meet changing requirements.

On September 29 and 30, 1941, more than 33,000 Jewish men, women, and children were murdered in Babyn Yar, a ravine in the Ukrainian capital Kiev. This event constituted one of the largest single massacres perpetrated by German troops against Jews during World War II. Over the following two years, Germans killed upwards of 70,000 more people. Upon evacuating the city in 1943, the bodies were exhumed and burned. Babyn Yar is the international symbol of what is known today as the “Holocaust by Bullets.”

The course aims to address key issues to assist architects, engineers, builders, and others interested in architectural and urban projects in areas of socio-spatial vulnerability.
In this collection of essays, architect Josep Llinàs experiments with new formats, such as Instagram stories, answering to no one but the heroes featured in his narrative. Ever-present is the work of Josep Maria Jujol—who dents, twists, and blurs everything he touches—a body of work far removed from any Calvinist work ethic, which Llinàs links to folk wisdom and, ultimately, to the behavior of a child. Beyond Jujol, other figures emerge: from Alejandro de la Sota to José Antonio Coderch, from David Lynch to Peter Handke, from his grandson to his parents, and from there to his great-grandparents... Meanwhile, never losing his smile, he draws, cuts paper, builds models and collages, and writes stories for the sheer joy of it—his status as a septuagenarian having liberated him from work as a form of punishment—only to channel them back into his architectural practice.
From 9–15 May 2022, a new platform for architecture and urban development will be held for the first time: the Architekturwoche Basel (AWB), which is to be repeated every two years in future. Initiated by the Architektur Dialoge Foundation and organized under artistic director Chrissie Muhr, the inaugural edition of AWB 2022 addresses the theme of “Reale Räume” (Real Spaces) – examining how globalization, digitalization, migration, climate change and the pandemic affect the urban spaces around us. Featuring over 100 lectures, guided tours, workshops, exhibitions, films, concerts and performances, the programme is aimed at a broad public. The events will take place in Basel-Stadt, Basel-Landschaft and neighbouring regions of France and Germany.
At the end of 2021, Lithuanian citizenship was restored to one of the most respected international architects – Massimiliano Fuksas. To celebrate this significant event to the whole Lithuanian architecture community, Kaunas University of Technology together with Studio Fuksas are organising a remote open lecture of Massimiliano Fuksas, entitled “Architecture and Innovation”. The lecture will be held on February 10 (17:00 LT, UTC+2; 16:00 IT, UTC+1) and will be followed by a panel discussion of Mr Fuksas and colleagues from the KTU Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture.
