How have the events of recent years impacted Brazilian visual arts? This is the focus of the "Brasil Visual" series, directed by Rosa Melo, which premieres on June 25, 2024, at 8:30 PM on the Curta! channel. The preview will take place this Saturday, June 22, starting at 5:00 PM at Praça Luís de Camões (Praça do Russel) in Glória. The free, public event will feature the screening of three episodes, a conversation with some of the series' participants, guest DJs, and a pocket show by artist Cabelo. Starting from the visual arts, the series addresses themes that have impacted society as a whole, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the demonstrations that swept the country, and artificial intelligence, while also exploring spirituality and the duality between the worlds of the living and the dead, among others.

The Open Day, hosted annually by the Istituto Europeo di Design (IED), invites eyewear retail giant Luxottica to this year's edition to teach the public how to prototype eyewear models as if they were for a new brand within the group. The experience will take place this Saturday, May 4, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the IED-SP campus, located at 617 Maranhão Street. Taking a step toward improving the quality of public space, the city of Barcelona, which will serve as the World Capital of Architecture in 2026, has launched a new International Ideas Competition for Young Architects. The initiative aims to transform 10 permanent blind walls—one in each district—into new facades. Organized by the Barcelona City Council and the Fundació Mies van der Rohe, in partnership with UNESCO and the International Union of Architects (UIA), the competition seeks architectural proposals that provide meaning to walls that are currently anonymous and unremarkable, exposed in public spaces in a state of permanent temporariness.

The new edition of the BIAU will be held in early December 2024 in Lima, an exceptional setting for discussions regarding extreme climatic conditions and their impact on the built environment. The submission period for all six categories will close in September, and the jury's decisions will be announced collectively at the end of October 2024. Under the theme CLIMAS: Actions for Good Living, this 13th edition of the Biennial reflects on and invites action toward producing more sustainable, equitable, and pluralistic futures through architecture and urbanism.

The 24th edition of the Pan-American Biennial of Architecture of Quito (BAQ2024) is approaching. As the most important architecture event in the Americas, it will take place from November 18 to 22, 2024, in the Historic Center of Quito. The event will bring together more than 2,000 daily participants, including prominent professionals and academics from around the world, to discuss and exchange knowledge on contemporary architecture.

The Growarq Week is an event dedicated to architects, engineers, designers, and students looking to revolutionize their design process through a methodology that combines two software programs: Revit and Lumion. The event will take place entirely online from June 3rd to 6th, starting at 7:00 PM daily.

On March 16, architect João Batista Martinez Corrêa, founder of JBMC Arquitetura e Urbanismo, will host a lecture at the new regional headquarters of the Council of Architecture and Urbanism of São Paulo (CAU/SP). The office is located in the former "Clotilde and Sérgio Ferreira Residence," a historic property recently landmarked by the Ribeirão Preto Municipal Council for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage. For many years, the house was home to university professor Maria Clotilde Rossetti and biologist Sérgio Henrique Ferreira, who was renowned for his discovery of the bradykinin-potentiating factor.

'Pieles Arquitectónicas, envolventes en madera para edificios existentes' (Architectural Skins: Timber Envelopes for Existing Buildings) is a competition that seeks to explore and research timber architecture as a means of intervening in and recovering existing urban infrastructure within the dense and programmatically diverse context of the city.

Galeria de Arte Ipanema opens two exhibitions curated by Paulo Venancio Filho during ArtRio week

Casa Teo presents the window display "Future Houses, Landscapes with Fruit," an installation featuring the brand's collection of furniture and objects, designed by art director and set designer Ana Arietti. The opening is scheduled for Tuesday, March 19, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, at Rua João Moura 268, Pinheiros, São Paulo.

Intermediate Architecture

A recurring theme in the work of artist Lígia Teixeira, the female universe and its social questions and representations are currently on display in Rio de Janeiro in the exhibition “Confinadas” (Confined), curated by Osvaldo Carvalho. This body of work was one of three selected from 300 entries in the 6th Piccola Galleria Selection Program, which she presented at the Casa Fiat de Cultura in Belo Horizonte last year. For the exhibition at the Centro Cultural Correios, several new series were developed addressing ageism, as well as issues of race and gender—illustrated by Black and trans brides, among other works—totaling approximately 50 small-format paintings and one large-format canvas. There is also a series titled “Caladas” (Silenced), in which masked women allude to the persistent difficulty regarding the female voice in society.

In celebration of Book Month, the Instituto Cervantes in São Paulo will open the exhibition "Anaqronías" by award-winning photographer Juan Cerón on April 25. Following an extensive conceptualization process and various projects that allowed for artistic growth, "Anaqronías" is the photographer's second personal project, a journey that has led to exhibitions in several countries across three continents—including Spain, Italy, the United Kingdom, Germany, China, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic—before finally arriving in Brazil.

The Anthropocene, artificial intelligence, climate change, migration crises... The world as we knew it is being reformulated through algorithms that group, optimize, and rethink our daily lives, from the public sphere to the domestic realm. Windowless houses for maximum privacy in insecure contexts; temples without cults housing skateparks or trendy nightclubs; parks without children featuring areas for pets of all sizes; or architectures without architects visualized from text interpreted by Big Data with unexpected results—these are just a few examples of our new environments, where the priority seems to be the act of reducing to reimagine.

The exhibition “Carmen Portinho: A Pioneer of Urbanism in Brazil” presents a series of photographs, drawings, and facsimiles that highlight the leading role of Carmen Velasco Portinho in the proposals and programs within the field of modern national architecture and urbanism. The exhibition is installed on the 5th floor of the Jorge Machado Moreira Building, at the University City. The opening takes place this Friday, October 18, at 10:00 AM.
