Known as "The Boomerang House" this architectural masterpiece seamlessly integrates into the coastal landscape, positioned in a privileged location from which it offers a unique experience that merges natural beauty with sculptural and functional design. A suspended bridge on a concrete wall invites us to enter the house, immediately captivating us with its innovative design centered around a transparent central void. This space serves not only as an efficient circulation axis but also as a pause point to frame the impressive view of the sea horizon from the main entrance.

The limitations of the site where the Casa Taller Zapallar is located suggest the construction of a house in the form of a long block, perpendicular to the coastal strip and on the flat section of the terrain. A block narrow enough to be located at the southeast end will allow protected views of the ocean without being seen by neighbors to the west and northwest. Assuming this fact, it opens the door to integrating a range of desires on how to inhabit this building.

Two hours' drive northwest of Santiago in the exclusive coast town of Zapallar, this weekend house was designed to reveal and heighten its specific context and benefit from the gentle Mediterranean climate that the central Pacific coast of Chile offers. Three specific site characteristics forced this project to search for a particular arrangement. First, the lot has a little ocean view bounded by a neighbor's house and a group of pine trees. Second, north sun exposure is almost perpendicular to the ocean view, and third, the site is limited to a protected creek full of conifers and native species.

We had been developing many houses in sloped sites and the main issue in all of them was the connection with the land. That was what this client asked us to continue and emphasize for his project. They wanted a house connected with the ground and with the context but saving privacy, obviously privileging the sea views, but also the landscape of the hills behind. The challenge of the site was to work with the slope (20% average). Besides the connection with the ground, that is an architectonic issue, we must be able to solve technical problems such as the management of rain waters or the contention of the ground by proposing creative architectural solutions.

Away from the sea, it seeks for tranquillity and views of the nearby hills through the peaceful native surroundings of the inner ravine in which the house is built.
House H is a reinforced concrete structure composed of a succession of longitudinal and transverse beams that work together to generate a single structural piece. As always, we prefer to inhabit a structure instead of structuring a room. In this way, we consider the technical feasibility of a project as its actual design resolution; feasibility is not separate from project design. This means that before becoming a house, the project is its own structure. Starting from the top down, the ceiling slab hangs from two main longitudinal beams on a north-south orientation, 41 meters long and 1.40 meters high.

The project is located in front of Zapallar bay, 169 km from Santiago de Chile in the region of Valparaiso. An isolated house in the forest at 450 m above the sea level, on the southern slope of the hill where El Boldo Park, a sclerophylls’ forest, is located. The thick stone walls modify the extreme topography in habitable levels, achieving two horizontal planes, in between the forest, which gives virtue to the territory and roots the architecture in an intimate relationship with its environment and the forest that surrounds it. Its complex variety of materials is balanced and related accepting each quality and its contrasts, managing to moderate its conditions, matching the appearance between concrete, wood, stone, and marble, all noble and long-lived materials, which contrast its rustic and warm persistence, with glass and steel roof, materials that give a contemporary look, an innovative and mixed face to the outside.

The assignment consisted in designing a beach house in the town of Zapallar. The site is far from the sea in the eastern urban boundary. The sloping terrain makes the views towards the sea be preceded by roofs, streets, trees and hills. This quality of urban view with the sea in the background was what inspired the main operation of the project. We chose to build in height and take advantage of the described views. There are 3 small overlapped levels plus the roof. The bedrooms are located in the first two levels and in the third level the main room. Finally, an exterior deck in the rooftop.
