One day, an elderly couple visited us to build a house on a peaceful land in Yeoju where a king’s tomb can be seen in the distance. For as long as one year since deciding to build a new house after their retirement, they organized and listed up their humble wishes which an architect has to carefully consider. It took quite a long time to approach the design considering the spirituality, the warmth, and the truthfulness they showed us. The approach was more careful because both the client and we were well aware that merely a functional house is not an objective in the project.

NATURE┃CULTURE - ROUTE52 CC is located on the highest ridge of Dangsan Mountain in Yeoju, which consists of a broad plain. Our expectations for this blessed place - the perfect location that can be easily found even from a distance offering a distant view and being able to enjoy the vast green and nature together - were unfortunately utterly blown away during the on-site survey when we found dozens of hectares of upended red-brown soil. Instead of mimicking nature sloppily by advocating the idea of 'architecture that blends in with nature,' we instead thought paradoxically that we should do the architecture and leave nature to nature and that this would be the most natural thing. In that site, we decided to place the long and wide concrete mass as raw as it is indifferently.

This three-story retreat house is located in Yeoju, a suburban city of Seoul, and was designed for a successful scientist and CEO of the famed company. The tract of land is large, but had a comparatively small buildable area. The site sits on a hillside, which is surrounded by nature and beautiful scenery. Accordingly, the owner particularly sought to have a more open and spacious living/kitchen area. The required program zones are set to being more private as you go farther upward: a family interactive zone on the 1st floor, with the private zones on the 2nd and 3rd floor. The design was initiated by juxtaposing all living spaces linearly in an east-west direction to obtain a good amount of sunlight and the best views for every individual space.
