Courtyard Renovation at the White Pagoda Temple / Tsinghua University School of Architecture + maison h

This project is located in Beijing’s historic center, in an area full of hutong laneways and ancient courtyards. It’s a hands-on academic project, conceived by master students from Tsinghua University, in which they investigate how to ‘lever social change in China through design’. Students deal with issues from a grounded, built reality, which complements what they learn in the design studio. Surrounded by authentic hutong life, the proximity of the site to the White Pagoda Temple provided a unique experience for our students to investigate.

What Tsuo is presented, is a wonderland fabricated by architects. In reality, we are far yet to break away from this crowded city, not even transcend spacial boundary of the villa. Nevertheless, like all our ancestors did, we are seeking to explore a new means of explana-tion in this confined space.

No.66 Lanman Hutong Renovation is sited in a typical courtyard that is occupied and shared by many households. This project started with two traditional houses and one privately-built house. The traditional houses are located to the south and are built with timber roof structures that rest on lateral brick walls. However, there is only lighting from the north, without any southern exposure. The privately-built structure is located to the north and needs to be reconstructed.
