Located in the centre of Vitoria, OLG5O is a former dental clinic converted into a home for a couple. The shape, the terrace and the luminosity were key when it came to developing this functional home that avoids a conventional refurbishment. The original state of the flat was none other than what one might expect from a clinic: a corridor and many partitions that were demolished to leave an open-plan space. A space that posed quite a challenge because, although a rectangular floor plan is very grateful when it comes to distribution, all the rooms had to be housed, avoiding new partitions and thus making the most of all the light that came in.

ICOMA is the acronim for Ilustre Colegio de Medicos de Alava, the medical professional association in the region of Alava in Spain, and this projects presents their new headquartes. The new offices for ICOMA are implemented on an existing space in a residential building, connecting the street level space with the one on the second floor. The adaptive reuse of the existing space involved the aperture and definition of two small glass courtyards, new light sources for the ground level, that allowed for an open plan in visual continuity while helping to clarify transits and the definition of static versus dynamic areas.

The proportion of the block is very upright. Nine floors are too many for the dimensions of the courtyard’s block. The first decision is to try to fluff up the maximum part of building adapting it to the maximum envelope possible: the result is a cantilever of 1.5m in every façade of the street, with the back of building allowing cross ventilation in the housing. The second decision is breaking the idea of a closed block courtyard and detaching the volume of the curve alignment in the section that is in contact with square.
