Circular Design Symposium: ‘What Goes Around Comes Around’

From 19–21 March, Architektūros fondas is organising an international three-day symposium on circular design, featuring a conference and an accompanying art programme. By linking critical discourse in urbanism and architecture with artistic practices, the symposium 'What Goes Around Comes Around' approaches circular design not only as a strategy for the reuse of spaces and materials, but also as a way to rethink value, labour, energy and continuity over time.

On May 10–11, Open House Vilnius, organised by Architektūros fondas, returns for its 11th edition. Once again, the event will invite residents and visitors to explore architecture through free tours of unique buildings that are usually closed to the public. Over 50 sites will open their doors, and popular meetings with the city’s creators—a hit from last year— will return. A new addition to the programme will be four guided stories about green urban spaces.

Designed in a spectacular, fragile natural area surrounded by tall pine trees, this is the largest athlete training centre in Lithuania. The rationality of its shapes and the functionality dictated by the typology of the building was discreetly matched to the expressive terrain without encroaching on the local context. The varying-height gymnasiums manage to avoid belittling the natural environment around them, rather accentuating its scenic nature and grandeur.

A residential house located in Naujoji Vilnia, a former industrial district in Vilnius, Lithuania. The house is situated in a contrasting area where the green valley of Vilnia River meets a harsh street and railway, with homes tightly packed next to large industrial buildings awaiting conversion. Given this unique setting, the house was named the 'Industrial Villa.' It features an iconic industrial silhouette, constructed from three-layer prefabricated concrete, adding a 'concrete crown' to the skyline of Naujoji Vilnia, dominated by chimneys and industrial buildings.

The double-decker's eyes are large windows that offer panoramic city views. The four-person family here wanted a funky, luxuriously flavored home. The interior of the luxury sense is caused by subtle brass details. The choice of this metal was inspired by the bronze roofs visible through the windows. All-day sunbathing into the apartment allows the bronze surfaces to sound different colors and create a different mood each time. The large, black stone panels that cover the wall contrast with the brass and help it even more reveal.

A former industrial territory was entirely dedicated to making various concrete elements for housing blocks that were widely built around the country during the Soviet period.
