The exit to the north of Lisbon is naturally associated with the course of the Tagus River. The narrow strip of flat, dry land between the Tagus River and its floodplain on one side, and the hills of the municipality of Vila-Franca de Xira, echoes of the Serra de Montejunto, on the other, has been gradually occupied by various types of infrastructure.
