Located on the banks of the San Pedro River, just outside the city of Valdivia, Chile, La Regalona house is a balancing act between local cultural heritage and the needs of a contemporary home. The guiding thread of the Regalona's design is sustainability, which steered the creative process to reconcile the aesthetic aspects of the work with its integration into the landscape.

From the T house of Cazú Zegers, designed in 2009 and built in 2011 on the shore of Laguna de Aculeo in Chile, a way of naming the projects arises, which comes from the alphabet, it is the alphabet of the poetic word and with this a series of houses that are the abstract synthesis of a letter that becomes a work of architecture. It has to do with the creation of reality through language. Each "letter house" has a unique dialogue with the landscape, a territorial dialogue where the work is a unity between landscape and architecture. The Ye house is a pavilion suspended over a landscape of myrtles with a privileged view of the Cayumapu River and its wetlands, created after the earthquake of May 29, 1960, in Valdivia. These wetlands have a rich fauna of birds such as the endemic black-necked swan and a dense vegetation layer composed of reeds and lotus flowers, among other species that are very characteristic of these territories.

The site is located within the vicinity of the Universidad Austral de Chile, specifically in a west corner of the campus. The limited size led us to a compact form and the harsh southern climate induced us to think of architecture more focused on itself, one that would try to generate exchanges with the outside.

This residence in the woods, located ten minutes away from city centre, is there to question its own nature. To what extent can a rural plot redefine a permanent dwelling for city users? The design concept addresses such matter as the search for shelter in open environments. However, late amendments on the brief, such as a requirement for both reading and working shared zones, plus comfort features like, for instance, natural lighting, determine a number of adjustments regarding the architectural programme. The basic outline includes three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a common space containing the kitchen, dining and living area.

With the same height as the preexisting constructions, it reinforces the relation with the landscape, the vegetation, and the river. Designed in a “Z” shape, it shares one plaza with each of the preexisting buildings: the dean’s offices and the postgraduate studies department. This arrangement also ensured the preservation of the most important trees and provides all of the spaces with vistas and plenty of sunlight.
