In the southwest of the city of Tübingen, the historic center of Derendingen is undergoing a period of transformation. Once shaped by its ribbon-like development, the area now faces a mix of renovation, repurposing, and selective densification. Within this evolving context stands a remarkable listed barn dating back to 1806, situated prominently beside the road and surrounded by the village church, an old schoolhouse, a bakehouse, and former agricultural buildings.

The socially responsible housing project Wolle+ in which the housing sociologist Dr. Gerd Kuhn played a pivotal role reacts directly to the housing requirements and social and communicative needs of refugees, but also wants to pursue the adaptive concept of Housing for All.

The intercultural education center is located in an attractive urban location not far from the historical district of Tübingen. The direct proximity to the riverside as well as the view of the castle are characteristic of the particular situation of the property. Inspired by the pavilion structure of the surrounding existing buildings, an ensemble of two differently sized buildings emerged: the two-storey primary school and the smaller, one-storey children‘s home. Both houses were designed on a square floor plan with a pyramid roof and are connected via a common, covered entrance area.

This 365 square-metre site is located in Tübingen; on a south-facing slope with a view over the city and of Tübingen castle. The 1960s development plan stipulates a specific position for the house on the site as well as “insertion into the surroundings” according to §34 of the Federal Building Code. The client commissioned the design of a family home that would pro- vide passively heated living space for two adults and four children. Use of energy efficient passive house technology, natural application of materials and prudent use of the resources at hand, make the buil- ding sustainable. The potential adaptation of the house to the fami- ly’s living situation was an important aspect thereof.
