Jiuguo Courtyard Inn / Modum Atelier

Jiuguo Courtyard Inn is a youth hotel located in the scenic area of the Tianjin City Concession, and is the first practice of Modum Atelier to incorporate an operational perspective in its design.The original building is mainly made of masonry with a timber roof, showing the combination of early colonial style and local building materials. As the building is located on the inner side of the street, it lacks a prominent commercial display surface, so how to highlight the entrance and courtyard features became the focus of the design. We adopted a 'patchwork' approach to the design intervention, maintaining the original building in its current state to the greatest extent possible, respecting the history and minimising unnecessary alterations.

Tianjin 4A Sports Park / Ballistic Architecture Machine

Award-winning Tianjin 4A Sports Park is a public park paying homage to the ancient Yixing town formerly located on site and weaving together retail, sports and environmental elements in a high-density maze program. The high-density park design maximizes the ecological impact of the relatively small site by raising environmental awareness through remarkable Play 'n Learn landscape features. The site is a modern city built over the remains of historical Yixing, a town with remarkable connection to another Yixing town in Jiangsu province. With the construction of the Grand Canal, the residents of Yixing moved their entire village, and reconstructed a facsimile to north of Tianjin city. While this historical town was destroyed, BAM utilizes the urban plan of the original Yixing as a palimpsest. The project is roughly divided into 4 plots which overlap each other. These quadrants are defined by a central axis which runs northwest to southeast which connects the residential district through the mall to the metro. The other axis is the large central plaza which is an open space for activities and events.

Facade Design of Tianjin Beichen Guangda Waste-to-energy Plant / Atelier NiYang

Tianjin Beichen Guangda Waste-to-energy Plant is located in the west of Shuangkou Sanitary Landfill of Domestic Waste in Beichen District, Tianjin. The project creates a dramatic effect on facades with minimalist design language, adding a touch of red to the endless wilderness. When the sky is clear during the day, the glass reflects the blue sky, forming a changeable rhythm of the façade with the red color steel plate; when night falls, the warm yellow light comes out of the glass and sets off with the red plate. The design provides an interesting visual experience and the building stitches itself into the surrounding environment.

In the last few decades, there has been an unprecedented scale of human migration on the land of China. Countless simple youths born in the countryside have left their native land, experienced drifting and tempering, and finally merged into the vast sea of people in the city, becoming a cornerstone of the urban development. However, there are 350,000 pieces of natural bamboo strips from the bamboo sea in the south of the Yangtze River coming to the northern metropolis after traveling about 1,200km, and setting up a stage to support Tianjin's fashion life. This is an unexpected encounter between the rural nature and the metropolis, and also a long-lost reunion between the wandering youth and the source of life.

The project, which was a detached farmhouse, is located in Jizhou District, Tianjin. The client advocates the spiritual realm of Tao Yuanming, a great Chinese poet in Jin Dynasty, and especially loves his masterpiece "Back to County Life". Before the renovation, he named it “The Hillside House”, which is taken from "I’ve loathed the madding crowd since I was a boy, while hillsides have filled me with joy" in that poem.

The project is located on the side of the winding tributary of Yongding River. In an endless meadow without a clear definition of the external place, the relationship between the building and the place is the floating feeling that arises naturally. The design started from the roof, we tried to use symbolic architectural language to establish a connection with the historical environment. Imagining a crystal clear water drop that would quietly dissolve into the endless and winding river. However, with the gradual development of the narrative, metaphorical polysemy emerges.

Client’s requirement/Design challenge:
The brief called for two different approaches. The core concept was to replace just some of the existing buildings with new structures, and to revitalise the remaining buildings. In the other concept, the architects were asked to ignore the existing constraints and consider the consequences of erecting a totally new building.
schneider+schumacher’s design concept unites both these approaches by creating a coherent programme for phasing the construction work. The idea won unanimous approval from both the jury and the local politicians and convinced them to rebuild not just a few of the buildings, but the entire school.

MVRDV in collaboration with local architects TUPDI has completed the Tianjin Binhai Library, a 33,700m2 cultural centre featuring a luminous spherical auditorium around which floor-to-ceiling bookcases cascade. The undulating bookshelf is the building’s main spatial device, and is used both to frame the space and to create stairs, seating, the layered ceiling and even louvres on the façade. Tianjin Binhai Library was designed and built in a record-breaking time of only three years due to a tight schedule imposed by the local municipality. Next to many media rooms it offers space for 1,2 million books.
