Sui County Hemei Center is a rural revitalization demonstration project jointly implemented by the China Foundation for Rural Development and five villages across three towns in Suixian County, Hubei. To promote the development of the Dahongshan Scenic Area and boost local tourism, the project adopts the concept of "Harmonious and Beautiful Villages" as its core philosophy. By connecting the five villages with a greenway loop, it transforms abandoned houses, assembly halls, and other idle resources into cycling stations, leisure courtyards, rural museums, cafés, and art restaurants, creating a complementary and interconnected rural cluster that stimulates regional development.

In the local dialect of Hunan and Hubei, "Chong" refers to a flat area between valleys, suitable for cultivation and irrigation. Jiukouyan Village, situated on the edge of the Xiangguang Fault Zone, features gently rolling mountains. The project spans six abandoned homestead plots in the village, with areas ranging from 120 to 1,050 square meters, scattered across the mountainous terrain.
Guangjiachong Valley in Suizhou City, Hubei Province, is just a 15-minute drive from the famous Ginkgo Valley Scenic Area. The Treehouse is located at the junction of two paths leading into the valley. The environment is somewhat bustling, and within a limited 90㎡ plot, the design needed to avoid the roots of three ancient trees while accommodating two standard guest rooms of no less than 50㎡ each and a utility storage room. During their first site visit, the designer and the owner established a clear strategy: to elevate the entire building. This approach not only created two distinct spatial qualities—quiet above and dynamic below—but also utilized the lush ginkgo canopies to provide privacy and scenic views for the guest rooms. Meanwhile, the ground level was freed up as a semi-outdoor activity area, naturally supporting a variety of vacation activities such as dining, roasting ginkgo nuts, swinging, and relaxing in the shade.

1. Terraced Tea-Oil Gardens: From "Idyllic Pastoral" to "Robust Structures"
In Huan Tan Town, Suixian County, thousands of acres of tea-oil gardens were cultivated through terraced farming. Here, the beauty of the landscape derives not only from nature's craftsmanship but also from the marks of human activity. Contemporary rural beauty is no longer merely pastoral poetry; amidst mountains and rivers, there are also various robust infrastructural megastructures: the lines of terraces, the contours of water reservoirs, and the upright forms of transmission towers.

Project Background. Located in Jiukouyan Village, Luoyang Town, Zengdu District, Suizhou City, Baimei Station is the pioneer demonstration building of Baimei Village constructed by China Foundation for Rural Development (CFRD), aiming to provide cultural, exhibition and activity space for the countryside. The site which is located halfway up the mountain connects to the village road with a 3-meter wide path. The strip-shaped site faces west, with a view of the verdant green hills, and there is a two-hundred-year-old ginkgo tree in the courtyard. The project discussed the following issues, how to integrate the new building into this site, and how the publicity of the station can coexist with the daily life of the villagers.

The tourism revenue of this region, so-called the tourism high-speed railway with the most beautiful landscape in Hubei, accounts for 70% of that of Hubei Province. With the opening of the Wuhan-Shiyan High-speed Railway, the distance between Wuhan to Suizhou will be shortened to 50 minutes only. The high-speed railway provides an unprecedented opportunity for the urban development of Suizhou, especially for the tourism. As a destination of tourism spot, the station will also become an important icon to present the local uniqueness.
