151 Toorak Road Commercial and Office Building / Bird de la Coeur Architects

151 Toorak Road is a 6-story office building with a ground-floor restaurant occupying the corner of Darling Street on a restricted site in an inner-city suburb of Melbourne. It responds to its heritage neighbors with an innovative Flex Brick second-skin facade over a traditional brickwork base. The design is drawn from careful analysis of the brick patterning on the former 1890s South Yarra Post Office opposite, coupled with the need to protect the west facade from heat load, while maintaining views.

Stanhope, in the Melbourne suburb of South Yarra, is ambitious for the area and at once utterly classic in its composition. With bold elements and sleek finishes of reflective metals and fluted glass, the design speaks to its surrounding context, turning the expansive landscape of trees and green spaces into the hero. Design details subtly reference classical architecture, with restrained use of high-quality materials that will age naturally to remain timeless in their expression. Enriching the experience and lives of residents, standing the test of time, and providing a responsible solution to the extended environment, enables Stanhope to become a beautifully considered object.

In creating an anchored place for life and its daily rituals to unfold, Emplacement is designed to be able to accommodate change, remain relevant, and through attention to detail and craft, last the tests of time. Replacing an existing 1970s dwelling that had been left to the elements, the proposal is proportioned from the exterior and feels generous from within. The planning ensures efficient planning for its five bedrooms, a multi-car garage, and open living areas, while also ensuring residents never feel disconnected.

The core idea for the renovation of this dark and run-down Edwardian house was to maximise natural light. The Client’s brief stipulated an efficient floorplan over a single level which prioritised ‘light and flow throughout’, ‘respect for the Edwardian features’ as well a preference for ‘curved edges’ and ‘real materials’. The interrogation of this brief led to a strong passive design philosophy and further exploration of the core idea via strategically placed glazing and the effect of light on curved forms and carefully selected materials.

Located in South Yarra, Argo is a sophisticated family home that capitalised fully on every square millimetre of its compact 214 sqm inner urban site. The design and massing carefully edit and respond to difficult planning interfaces at each boundary and the organization of the home was set up to overcome the associated challenges of a south facing rear yard. All ground floor spaces and circulation pinwheel around a central northeast facing courtyard which serves not only as a welcome focal point to the entry sequence of the residence but also injects natural light deeply into the principal living spaces of this high calibre home.

Like a naturally occurring trilithon found in rock formations, the Canterbury Road Residence is made up of three simple structures, clad in rough lavastone stacked to form a contemplative passageway. The separation between the forms is made apparent as though they are three large boulders leaning on one another. The organic nature of the hand laid stone walls draws one from the street into the heart of the house; the upper level forms the lentil over the entry.
