The gap of time and space

This is a renovation project that uses the time gap of summer vacation to fill in the space gap around the campus. It requires the whole process to be extremely fast, flexible, effective while all things come to be highly reasonable and operational.

The orthogonal spatial structure inside the Nanhai Primary School collides with the polygonal street interface outside, which produces many "remaining spaces". Based on this spatial structure, we introduce the entrance corridor, parking shed, folding courtyard & pavilion, fence renovation, etc. to reconnect and activate those "remaining spaces". This renovation not only meets the functional requirements, but also enriches the original spatial structure. In addition, due to the school's urgent need for usable area, we added different sheds and mezzanine spaces at different levels, including rooftop multi-functional shed, roof gardens, reading sheds, etc., to further expand the possibility of space in the vertical direction. These new sheds on the ground or on the roof are semi-outdoor structures that adapt with the subtropical climate and the daily use, and thus create the shadow that accommodate the everyday life without air-conditioner. At the same time, this type of structure also reduces the approval process for formal construction applications. Other renovations include corridors, toilets, facade renovations, etc. We hope to carry out an integrated renovation for Nanhai Primary School at all scales and levels.

Nantou Ancient City, also known as Nantou, historically governed areas including Hong Kong, Macau, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Zhongshan, and Dongguan. It served as an administrative center, a coastal defense fortress, and a hub for maritime traffic and foreign trade in the coastal regions of Lingnan across various dynasties. It is also one of the historical and cultural origins of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. In the early years of the founding of the People's Republic of China, with the relocation of the County government, Nantou concluded its 1700-year history as an ancient city and naturally evolved into Nantou Village on the site of the old city. Since the reform and opening up, and with the rapid urbanization and industrialization of Shenzhen, Nantou has gradually transformed into Nantou Urban Village.

The architectural design inspiration for this project originates from the heavy industry domain, drawing from fuel towers and jet propulsion systems, with a focus on the dynamics of "energy storage" and "ejection." It translates into a symbolic architectural space using concise language, aligning with the core spirit of the American retro jewelry brand Rock&Ride. The design is rich in passion and power, symbolizing the infusion of continuous energy into the free riders. The breakthrough in the context of block-type commerce lies in the open embrace of urban space, creating a favorable urban living experience. Simultaneously, the construction of the architectural image must strike a balance between artistry and mass appeal, allowing for a distinctive commercial space that can amplify the brand's voice and inject new vitality into the urban landscape.

TEA WELL is dedicated to creating innovative space experiences based on pure tea and a unique Oriental aesthetic lifestyle. Whether it's the physical spaces or the products, they convey the founder's passion for and exploration of contemporary Oriental aesthetics. The essence of the brand lies in the acceptance of time. RUHAUS STUDIO has taken on the design of TEA WELL's fifth store, and synchronously reimagined and upgraded the space style to complement the updated product line. Creating spaces in the urban environment that integrate Oriental aesthetics and natural experiences requires us to trace back to the origins of traditional Chinese painting. We strive to rediscover the Eastern way of observing nature that resonates with the Eastern mindset. By bringing this approach into the lives of today's young people, we aim to establish a harmonious connection between space and emotions and reconstruct a better Oriental world that invites exploration.

The project’s context - Shenzhen Capital Plaza was launched in 2013 and completed in 2022. The total construction area of the project is 167640 square meters and the building height is 262 meters. It is located in the core area of Houhai, Shenzhen, and stands next to the China Resources Headquarters. The project base has three characteristics. First of all, the project backs to the office and business district and faces Shenzhen Bay. Second, subway lines, streets, and two-story pedestrian systems across the base. Third, it is a link that integrates many elements. The location, scale, and transportation resources of the project determine that it is a "hub park" integrating commercial, hub, coastal activities, and other elements. The podium connects the surrounding, and the swirling open volume integrates the subway, Elements such as commerce, pedestrian system, waterfront activities, and roof gardens are combined to become a "Central Park".

Site Environment: "Picturesque Mountain Scenery" - Victoria Park Academy is the first school of Victoria (China) Education Group in Shenzhen. Located on the north side of Dananshan Mountain in Nanshan District, adjoining Li Lin Park and Dananshan Park, the outdoor space features a soccer field, a basketball court/ tennis court/ athletic field, and a running track. When students step out of the classroom, they are embraced by natural and peaceful mountain scenery, enhancing their connection to nature. The original red brick building consists of two gymnasiums, and in the design renovation, AG preserves the original gable roof structure, which is a series of M-shaped gables that echo the hills where the site is set. Making the most of the natural setting of the site, the design takes inspiration from it and tries to create a harmonious environment with students and teachers at its core. The new campus design tries to promote social interaction and collaboration, and at the same time, bring nature seamlessly into the campus.

Dongcai Industrial Park is a typical urban factory area in Shenzhen, the feature of this type is simple line distribution, high efficiency, homogeneity, extensive and monotonous. With the expansion of the urban circle and the transfer of the urban industry to the suburbs or other cities, the property owners and industry types in this area have become s decentralized and complex in constant renewal. The SMOORE headquarters is located in this area, which has been renewed over the past few years to gradually form the enclosed main campus. The Building 7#8#, which was renewed and designed by Atelier Diagonal is located outside of the main area and separated by the urban building.
