It was established in 2005 and has been committed to the exhibition and theoretical research of contemporary art. In 2003, Uranus transformed a furniture warehouse in the Eastern Industrial Zone of Shenzhen OCT into the OCT Contemporary Art Center, while initiating the overall planning and design for the transformation of the industrial zone into a creative cultural park (referred to as OCT Loft). The first OCAT was completed in 2005 and served as the starting point for the subsequent OCAT series throughout China. In 2022, the two-floor factory building B10, originally designed for disk production in the center of northern area of OCT Loft, was renovated into a new art museum-OCT Contemporary Art Terminal B10, known as OCAT-B10.

With the rapid development of Shenzhen, the urban population increased rapidly. It was up to 17.56 million in 2021. At the same time, there is a huge gap of places. The gap of places in Grade 1 of elementary schools in the whole city was 49,500 and that in the first year of junior high school was 10,600 in 2020. The highly intensive urban construction land has also led to a lack of land for the construction of elementary and secondary schools. There is a sharp contradiction between the gap of places and the lack of land for the construction of schools.

Historic Memory
The Daya Bay Nuclear Power Plant is where large-scale commercial nuclear power generation began in China. Over the past forty years, six nuclear power units have been built, progressing from technology introduction to independent development. This has led to the creation of a significant domestic nuclear power milestone. The Daya Bay Nuclear Power Plant was constructed in the 1980s on top of the granite geological bedrock at Ma Ling Kok. The construction involved cutting mountains, digging rocks, and reclaiming land. The project is situated on one of the pits left by the quarrying. The mountainous landscape bears witness to the historical development of the nuclear power base, which has been restored and remodeled to create the Daya Bay Nuclear Science and Technology Museum. The landforms serve as a reminder of the changes that have taken place over time.

“In-between Pavilion” is TAO's second urban renewal project completed in Nantou Ancient Town, Shenzhen. It is also one of the exhibition galleries of the Diverse Homology Museum complex, narrating the mutual influence between political power and geography of the Pearl River Delta region, centered around Nantou. It was originally a place of high density with two adjacent residential buildings on the site, and public spaces were intensely compressed. Under the interaction of constant renewal, a symbiotic relationship between spaces of different natures and eras is formed. This state of natural symbiosis gives the project a unique aesthetics of chaos and vitality in the Nantou Ancient Town. The site is located on the north side of Nantou Ancient Town in Shenzhen, comprising three different property plots. The autonomous and spontaneous construction in the urban village has resulted in a confined spatial layout and visual occlusion. It will become an important node connecting surrounding public spaces as the site transforms from private residences to a public domain. This shift in identity will prompt the design to respond proactively.

NT46 and NT88 are self-built houses by villagers. The main brick-concrete structure of the building no longer meets safety regulations and requires overall structural reinforcement. Usually hidden or irrelevant, this seemingly inconspicuous "standard process" actually has extremely symbolic meaning in our eyes: an urban village may not be "high-end", but its bottom line should be safety and dignity that translate into care and respect for locals. Only above this bottom line can we have the mood and necessity to continue the discussion. Nantou is evolving from temporary to permanent, marginal to normative, vague to clear, and a new urban identity and historical mission are being implanted. Therefore, we developed a consistent expression in both projects: turning structural reinforcement into visible exteriorization, leaving behind recognizable new layers that form a new logic and ethics. The design strategy of strictly inheriting the existing structural system, and reinforcing areas only where there are deficiencies through calculation, is a standard practice. However, making system-level adjustments to the structure and avoiding large-area component reinforcement is another kind of specificness. The idea of avoiding reinforcement of large-area components to preserve the original appearance of the existing building not only meets the minimum intervention requirements but also respects those who are emotionally bound to the building in a sense.

In this 100-school renovation activity, we are responsible for the design of the project Jiuxiangling Kindergarten, which is located in Xili Primary School in Jiuxiangling Village, Nanshan District, Shenzhen. Jiuxiangling Kindergarten was rebuilt from an old factory in the gap between the urban Village and Xili Primary School. It was built in the 1990s. Due to its relatively distant construction period, it is not close to the municipal road and is surrounded by factory buildings and residential buildings in the urban village. The kindergarten consists of a 3-story framed teaching building and a 2-story brick-concrete office building. The building in the park is 30 years old, and the structural appraisal report shows that there are a certain degree of safety problems, the water and electricity pipe network, fire protection system, and air conditioning are also very old, the exterior wall is falling off, the bungalow on the south side of the two buildings is stacked with a lot of teaching aids and sundries, the public space of the whole kindergarten is very small, and the children can not get the place for open outdoor activities.

This is an urban cluster that originally consisted of multiple buildings with different property rights of the land. Part of it was preserved and partly demolished and renovated to form a new composite urban community. It is both a building and a miniature urban village. An open-ended concrete structure integrates all the old and new elements of the site, making it a stage for the lively and ever-changing life here.
