Wildlife thrives along the marshy shores of Shelter Island, and tucked into its tree line is the Osprey House- an architectural threshold at the edge of Mashomack Preserve. A one-lane dirt road winds around the Preserve, culminating at this property at Cedar Island Cove. Our client, Joe Quinn, wanted to build a home for his family here that would foster their love for beach walks, kayaking, and living within nature.

The design of this weekend family retreat on Shelter Island, NY responds to the location’s wistful beauty. Mature trees, hedgerows and rolling lawns extend to a narrow sandy beach and the water beyond. Sweeping views to the south and west take in an abandoned boathouse and a scrawny windswept tree that grows out of a crumbling concrete pier.

Hill House / LSS

The Hill House is a modern year-round refuge located on a wooded hillside. The house, acting as a threshold, marks the transition from trees to rolling fields that extend to the distant waterfront. Because it is situated on a nature preserve and protected wetlands, great care was taken to design a home reverential to its location. The client, a trustee of the Shelter Island Nature Conservancy, requested a home that was sensitively knit into the site with intimate spaces for the family and a large outdoor event space for entertaining.

YN-13 House is organized on its site as three independent volumes enclosing a courtyard-like space with a swimming pool at its center. The biased cut of the main house’s pitched roof and its protruding corners underscore primary views of the landscape and ocean. Conceived as a buoyant mass and inspired by historic Japanese residential structures in Kyoto and Kanazawa, the house’s unique siding design of western red cedar vertical battens and clapboard merge with the standing seams of the stainless steel roofing to visually unify the wall and roof surfaces.
